2003 4.6 intake off
I do have a couple questions.
1. I have the intake off and it has the plastic electronic intake plenum extension on it. Is there another intake that can be used to eliminate the plenum extension and if so will it cause a cel due to the plenum not being plugged in?
2. If I look down the intake at the bottom I can see some oil puddling. Where would this oil have come from pcv system?
3. Is it necessary to use the cam lock tools? Or can I carefully hold the cam gear while releasing chain tension so valves do not contact pistons. I cannot bar engine over at this time due to a stone falling down the plug hole which is another reason head is coming off (what are odds it was a perfect size stone sitting next to plug tube on intake and I was in hurry so wasn't blowing around the hole as I usually do)
Any help is appreciated
I would not remove it for that reason.
Having experience with it, the motor that turns the inside air director has it's outside connector at the front.
Normally the director is operated somewhere in the 2800 rpm range just before torque peak of 3200 rpm. This shortens the air path for high RPM above the peak torque area.
Without it you may lose some torque.
Normally we drive below the peak torque most of the time so the air path is in the long state. Therefor should not defeat its presence.

I would lock the cams, then remove the gears, then the heads in that order.
As for the stone, the piston comes up to a flat portion in the heads on the lower side so might do damage to the piston crown or the head in that area if forced and does not crush.
Good luck.
