Pass through Wire tip

So while installing my third brake light cam i had to do a little wiring. Instead of using the switch they provided i went to my #4 upfitter switch. As other have noted on here there is just about zero room to do what you need to do down there on the pass through wires. So i was looking for a way to make room and it is actually quite easy to give your hands some space. I have attached pics showing the panel to remove. It is only held in place by 2 plastic push pins at the front of the panel, they are easily removed with a plastic interior tool. Once this panel is removed it makes getting to those wires actually pretty easy. Sorry about the pics it was dark when i was working on this. Now for the engineer that stuck the pass through wires on the opposite side of the truck from the upfitter wires that person needs to find a new career.

I removed that panel when I did mine and it was still terrible trying to crimp onto the wires. Sure, I could grab them very easily. Trying to get my crimping pliers up there to make the connection was another story.

tell me about it, nextbto impossible to fet 2 hands in there. I had to do it one handed and hope i caught the wire with the crimp.

I guess from working on airplanes in tight spaces it felt like a lot of space to me. I also used ratcheting crimpers so its easy to lock the splice and just shove the wire in, instead of trying to balance the splice, wire, and crimpers at the same time. I didnt see any one mention pulling this panel previously thats why i shared. I extended all my pass through wires while i was in there and bundled the wire up for later. So next time it will be much easier to use them.

Those wires prompted the purchase of a ratcheting crimper for me too. I won't be beat again! LOL...

i also used my ratcheting crimpers, but the angle to get to it for me was painful, i have arthritis in my neck from working on airplanes, under instrument panels and in cramped hell holes/ aft electrical bays.

This may be a dumb question, but what are the passthrough wires? All I have read about wiring up the upfitter switches was exterior, are these interior versions of the same wires or something different?

There are 4 blunt cut wires that pass through the firewall on the passenger side for use by the end user.

Oh, so they are not tied directly to the upfitter stuff, and are just 4 wires that can be used rather than trying to do the old fashioned poke through a grommet method of getting misc wires through the firewall?

I removed the glove box as well as the side kick panels. A lot easier to see everything.
Instead of crimping I used Posi-Loks. Did all 4 wires on both sides. And, if you heat the black covering with a hair dryer, you can pull them off so you have an inch more to work with.

Thanks frogracer. I do not have upfitter switches but I do have the 4 pass through wires, so I guess its part of the base wiring harness.
