I would like some advice on how to do my exhaust. I'm getting close on my 73 SCS and want some opinions on what to put in the pipes. I am going to dump the exhaust out from right in front of the rear tires. I have a 390 Fe that I bore forty over. I am running a moderate pro Comp cam. The pipes I took off are just straight pipes with 24 inch glass packs. It sounded really good to me when I took it off with a worn out motor and leaking *** headers. I am just wondering if I should stick with the glass packs or maybe putting on some forty series flow Masters. Let me know what you guys think. I am about to put the bed on my truck and wanted get the pipes in first.
Not a fan, personally, of Flowmasters. FE engines with dual glasspacks have a nice hotrod sound. If you liked that sound stick with it. You can get a new set the same length rather than reuse the old stuff if you like.
I've got glass packs on the copper truck and love them. Got flowMasters on the brown truck and they're fine, I prefer the sound off the glass packs-especially when it's echoing off other cars when driving in traffic...
With your rebuild did you up the compression? I had glasspacks on a low compression motor and after rebuilding it to a 10:1 motor it was crazy loud with the same glasspacks. Just something to consider.
A few years ago, I ran 31" glasspacks on my 351M. A little back story on it. I was running headers and dual exhaust, Eddy intake, Carter 625 and a Comp Cam 268 camshaft...always had dudes asking me if it was a 390.
Go with the glasspacks!! After they rotted out, I had them replaced with 41" glasspacks....didn't sound the same.
I wish there were better videos with just the different mufflers. Thanks for the replies. I might put the old ones on just for the break in and see what I think.
Nice trucks guys! Steven that is just like what mine sounded like when I drive it home. I like it. I am only a couple months out from starting mine. I will make sure to post a video on this thread.
