Carb snort

Need some advice. 68 Camper Special 390 w/Holley manual choke. I just put in new plugs, wires, cap, rotor and coil. Timing was advanced to about 11 degrees. I installed a pertronix 1281 but after seeing flames from the carb i switched back the the original points. Now i get old faithful instead of fire. any suggestions?

Sounds like it has been the carb all along, not the difference in ignitions. Have you checked the carb, needle and seat? Sounds like it's not restricting gas flow into the bowl.

@KOT390 I just rebuilt the carb. Im a handy guy but never touched an automotive carb, so it doesnt surprise me that it could be the source of all this frustration.

Yeah if you have gas shooting out the bowl vent (which is what I take "old faithful" to mean) then you have float/needle and seat issues. I would go back to that and check your work.

Jeffaffa is the Holley whisperer. He'll be along shortly. Do you have a Holley with external adjustable floats? Post a pic

if you have gas coming out the vent tube an you just rebuilt it then it's the float pin retainer clip is not pushes down onto the groove of the needle seat collar. The needle is jumping out of it's seat with the clip off.

No problem Chris. That's part of why I'm here.

Is old faithful indeed flowing fuel out the vent tube(s) or in the throat of the carb? I am assuming you have a Holley 2300 2V carb so it's only got one bowl. And old faithful is out of the vent tube. Since you just rebuilt it your kit should have come with the blue "reusable" metering plate and bowl gaskets. Hopefully with the plastic "reusable" bowl screw seals also. If this is true and you used a good quality brand kit, here is what I would do.
1.Cut a pop or can in 1/2 about 1/3 the way up from the bottom. The aluminum they are made of is so thin you can use full size scissors.
2.Remove one of the 2 lower bowl screws and drain the bowl's gas in to the can you just cut.
3. Remove the bowl.
4. Flip the bowl upside down and adjust float so it is horizontal (level).
5. With the bowl still upside down try blowing in the bowl's fuel inlet. The needle and seat should have the fuel inlet sealed off. If you can't blow in to it then reinstall the bowl. Don't forget to put the accelerator pump cover's lever under it's actuator lever.
6. If you can blow in to it then either there is foreign matter in the seat or a bad needle and seat assembly. Replace it. Holley part number 6-504.
7. Once you get the truck idling with no old faithful, remove the bowl's site plug on it's side. With engine still idling slowly adjust the float so the fuel level is right at the bottom of the site plug's hole. Make an adjustment and wait a bit for the fuel level to react to it.

Oh wow, how utterly hilarious. What a waste of time just to flex it up a little, when the OP can't even come back and verify what the actual problem is. Sounds like the New Guy had it covered to begin with...minus the holding of the hand that is. LOL

Yes and darn few at that. Many of our members weren't even born yet when the last American cars rolled out with carburetors.
So glad we have a couple good carb tuners aboard like JEFFFAFA

True. But I (we all) have to consider future googlers. And the carb problems they may have. You know how I ran across this forum years ago? Via google. I was working at a Ford dealer that had thrown away all their Ford parts books and microfische machines. So I had no way of looking up any Ford part numbers prior to the 1980 model year. Via google I ran across where Numberdummy had given people the part number I needed. I recognized I could also help people here and joined. Especially since I work at a Ford Dealer that still has a microfische machine. On my desk. This is it.

Right, but like I said, the OP can't even verify the actual problem so it is pointless. Future googlers will probably get tired of wading through all the needless stroking and adulation that goes on around here just because someone has more green squares than the other person, and reading about how cool a handful of users think each other are hahaha I know I have.

I'm not exactly sure what direction you're coming from. I do know that we are not as "stiff" as other tech forums are. I have read other forums that actually sounded Mean towards the person who needed the help. Condescending. That is not here. We are more of a light and lively group. We get the job done helping people. And have fun doing it.
