Fuel gauge problem

Hi my name is mike im new to this so please bare with me. I recently bought a 1989 f150 xlt with a 4spd and 4.9. I am starting to get annoyed with the fuel gauge not working. It goes all the way to full when the selector switch is unplugged which i heard its suppose to do. Well here is my question/problem, i dropped the back tank because i thought it might be the sending unit so with the pump out of the tank i had it plugged in and the selector switch was still connected to. Anyway with the pump out of the tank and plugged in we ran the float up and down and my gauge worked like it should. Sooooo now with everything all back in were it should be i get nothing my gauge reads empty and thats the front and rear. How can i tell if its the switch or not or is it the sending unit? Which by the way the rear pump and sending unit were just replaced. Hope you all can help me thank you !
