I had an interesting experience today. Before committing to welding in patch panels on my 8 foot bed, I found a pristine bed for $140 in a junkyard about an hour away.
At this price, I figured it was worth the drive. I called the yard to ask if it was as good as it looked and they stated it was as it appeared in their website's inventory photos.
I loaded up my old bed on a flat bed and drove down, paid the $2 entrance fee and walked 1 minute up the hill from the office to find this:
I walked back to the office and asked what happened. The guy there smiled and told me the front end loader bashes all the cars. Apparently they forgot to mention this when I called and asked twice about its condition.
What a shame ruining a perfect bed more than anything.
I would avoid this place called Stafford pick a part in VA.
I have mixed feelings about the one in Stafford. Their sister yard in Fredericksburg, however, has been a good place to "shop". They have been very helpful and I've found a wealth of good stuff there. A few years ago I found a pristine 86 blue and silver XLT with an undamaged tail gate. My father and I have matching 86 blue and silver XLTs. Mines a 250 4X4 and his is a 150 2wd. I got a lot of pieces off of that one. They rotate stock randomly so it's best to check their inventory frequently if you want something specific.
I don't know how many times over the years I've cursed the wrecking yard chimps for ruining good parts. We don't have any self serve yards in this area, but I've installed lots of used parts including engines over the years. Most of the time they are too lazy to disconnect the wiring and fuel lines...they'll just cut everything out which often forces you to tear everything apart to switch the engine harness and lines. A little common sense goes a long way but apparently its lacking at most of the yards around here.
Try getting in touch with Ramey's used auto parts southeast of Inwood. He told me he had a few of our trucks up there but I haven't gotten up there yet.
