I had a 2010 F150 FX4 (that I loved dearly) burn to the dirt in November of 16. After emptying an extinguisher on it (I'm a career firefighter-so this was extremely embarrassing). It was narrowed down to the alternator being the ignition point. No voltage gauge in the truck so I had the annoying tone and light. Alerted me repeatedly about 15 times, then the truck stalled, smelled smoke, got my family out and started trying to extinguish. I had just cleaned and oiled my K&N, so the intake tube was full of fresh oil. Before the fire got beyond putting out with my now empty extinguisher, I could tell that it had melted through the plastic intake tube that is about an inch above the alternator. At this point, everything was melting all over the fuel rails so I grabbed what I could out off the cab and just stepped back waiting on the rural fire department to show up. Had no aftermarket electronics in the truck whatsoever. I chocked this up to a freak accident. Now, I have a 2010 F250 FX4 that is also stock. No aftermarket anything. Only things the same about these two are factory navigation, factory sub stereo system and sunroof. Day before yesterday, I started the truck to let the AC cool off and I heard a roaring noise. Opened the door and saw the battery light was on. Switched the truck off, restarted, normal. Then it started the noise again. I thought maybe I had left something on and the batteries were just weak and drawing a lot charging. Next thing I know, I smell burning wires odor. Immediately backed the truck out of my carport into the open yard and switched off. Didn't smell the odor anymore, checked all connections, looked alternator over closely... Nothing. Started the truck back up, let it run about 5 minutes, everything was normal. Then, the noise came back, light came on and the alternator started glowing red inside and smoke was rolling out of it. Switched it off and it continues to burn inside for about 5 minutes. No flames, just lots of smoke. Anyone else hear of problems with Ford alternators this year? I know my 5.4 F-150 and this diesel are different but, WTH?I can't find many complaints or a recall on this. Just curious if anyone else has had this problem. Thanks!
