I have a 94 extd 3.0 60k miles. At about 70-75 mph i experience a vibration in the steering. Not too intense but annoying. The tires have been recently balanced so I can rule that out, also tires have only 6k on them. What should I look for (bushings/ball joints...?). Any help would be appreciated
Yes, you may have gotten the tires to weight balance out correctly, but did you look at the tires when they were being balanced? For example, I have two wheels on the back of my aerostar right now that are bent. they balanced out beautifully, with little weight, but they shake my arms numb at 60 mph and up if they are the front(I am trying to dig up replacement wheels as we speak...but they are aftermarket 14x7's that are no longer made). Jack up the van, and spin the wheel as fast as you can by hand, and check fron the front and from the side to see if the tire or wheel is out of round(this is what I suspect) or the wheel is bent. I have had to return new tires to get some that where not even close to round, as most Dufuses at tire shops don't look for this sort of thing unless there is money to be made.
Good luck
I experienced symptoms as you describe at ~55 to 70mph,
turned out to be worn front right wheel bearing, on turning steering wheel to the left at those speeds you could feel the vibration being transmitted over the tie rod to the steering...
I have a 1986 Aerostar which has the same problem and it is worse when yo brake . This is the linkage under the hood from the steering coloum to the steering rack. It has 2 uj joints and one has worn on my car and this is why mine has the problem. I have replaced it now and all is well so it may be yours is starting to ware?
Good luck
Steve
to keep it current: Changed rotors/bearings/pads on both wheels. Took it to mechanic & he said all frt end parts (ball joints etc) look ok. Am having it aligned by same tomorrow. Am back to looking at wheels & tires again. I will rotate & let you know.
After reading elsewhere in this forum I decided to change the bushings on the front sway bar (stabilizer?). I took it on the highway & it drives like NEW! A completely different van! If anyone is having similar problems, I suggest trying this first. it was the best $15 & 1 hour under a car I ever spent.
