Here is an option I've seen online. Some of the old venders used to sell an inner fender with the battery box like this one, but I've not seen one for sale in years.

You could keep the stock location and go with a drop out battery box? Link

I've done two trucks...a 48 with 350 Chevy and a 49 with 302 Ford. In both instances I found ample room on the passenger side firewall for the battery...

I used a polished stainless drop down box, I did not want the battery in the engine compartment..however I am still using a bench seat, I have the carpet cut and a removable piece of carpet to get access, the drop down box alone is ok, but if you need to jump it, it's a pain. If you don't mind it in engine compartment go with it mounted at the firewall. just my opinion

Many locations other than the battery to hook up jumpers...ground is simple, positive side can be picked up at starter relay, fuse block, back of alternator, etc. Small battery packs that are on the market now work great for jumping without the need for bulky cables.

Here is an inner fender mounted battery box that my buddy installed in his truck. The box is chrome so it is a little difficult to see in the picture but it looks real nice in the truck. I was always a bit concerned about placing that much weight in that location since the inner fender is not made for it...that said, it seems to work.
