Engine braking

I was just leaving for a trip with my 2009 F350 6.4 l diesel with a 6 speed auto transmission pulling my 40' gearbox 5th wheel trailer 17k and while slowing down on the off/ on ramp the transmission downshifted what sure seemed to be too far, RPM went up to 3500 that's when the up pipe cracked on my exhaust ! Did the engine braking cause it? Did the transmission shift down too far?

If tow mode was activated, Its possible. My wrecker at work is a '15 F550 And I use that mode everytime I load a car up. It not only will stiffen the brakes, But it will down shift when stopping or slowing and you will feel it. However, it is a gas job. Now how the brakes stiffen I don't know as it is HB assist.
