I need to replace the 5.4 in my 2002 F-350. It's not a candidate for repairs or upgrades - something catastrophic happened to it. Has anyone (successfully) converted their truck from a 5.4 to a 6.8? There are a ton of posts on this subject with no real information and lots of guessing. I assume I will need the complete engine, wiring harness, fan shroud, ECM, and preferably the transmission. Should I expect a gauge cluster/PATS problem? Will the ECU need to be reprogrammed? Are the air cleaner/radiator/motor mounts the same?

 

If you find a 2002 V10, everything should just bolt in.

But like you, I've never heard of a successful transplant like this. There might have been ONE a long time ago that I remember seeing somewhere.

 

I agree - lots of talk and no first hand experience. I expect the ECU will be needed from the donor vehicle - one thing I keep running into is finding van motors and ECU's. I'm hesitant to use a van ECU in a pickup. Vans did things differently - like VSS location was somewhere besides the rear axle/etc.

 

Yes, the vans use the OSS of the transmission to compute road speed, not the ABS sensor in the rear end.

You'll definitely need a pickup donor vehicle.
