i have a 1984 with a I6 in it. it is freshly rebuilt with 150 miles on it, i am 16, and want to know how to get the most HP gains out of this engine for a reasonably price? ne help is great!
You could do the usual offenhauser intake, carb 390, headers, cam, new rear gears unless they are already in the 3.73-4.10 range. Or you could go get a v-8 for the same money as mods above and blow the 6 away, and have way more potential. Just kidding, threw that in for shock value. You can get headers and cams anywhere you would usually get performance parts, intakes are limited to offenhauser, and clifford performance, carbs again can be found in many places. If you have a 2bbl going to a dual plane manifold and 4bbl actually is better performance/mpg wise or at least that is what everyone seems to think. Good luck with the 6
there is always the quick and easy route of NOS. it gives you the most power for the buck and it doesnt take a certified technician to put it in. the L6 has forged internals and a bulletproof diehard reputation so i imagine it would handle the extra boost quite nicely. you dont get the satisfaction of knowing you built a very powerful machine but it will make you go fast.
yea i read somethin somewhere, probly was the HD. i was just lookin under my hood and saw some real nice little flat spots on the intake runners to put some direct injection nitrous. it would be the coolest thing to turbo a 6 but so far as ive read its a project and a half. a little nitro juice for draggin makes ya go without the hassle.
You could spray the 300, but be careful! Detonation is most prevalent in low rpm, high load conditions. That's where the 300 is always running. I wouldn't do more than a 50 hp shot. That doesn't sound like much, but that will add about 100 ft-lbs of torque in the 300's operating range.
A turbo setup would actually be pretty easy, the EFI exhaust manifolds would work well to be modified turbo manifolds (as in, twin turbo 300). I'm looking to do a twin setup in the future on a '77, though the problem is with the kind of pressure ratio I'd like to be running, I wouldn't trust carburetion for accurate fuel delivery so I'm going to be spending a lot adding a stand alone EFI system if I go through with it.
A low boost system would be very easy to do though, half of the work is physically locating everything. The other half is preparing the engine and tuning it properly.
Check out a company called Clifford, they carry a lot of performance items for thes engines and were very helpful when I had my '90
headers, exhaust, Paxton supercharger, ignition.
that 300 ran like no ones business
