So just got done doing head gaskets and studs. Truck runs great, sounds great, has a terrible exhaust leak where the y pipe meets the turbo and a coolant leak from I'm thinking the intake but hoping not. Anyway my reason for concern is i have now excessive blow by. Looks like steam. Never used to have any. Next I have a bit of oil in my coolant. Nothing of major concern but you can see a bit of a sheen in it. So my question is, is this from having the heads off and oil getting in the coolant passages and vice versa? Will it clear up? Or is there cause for concern. Any help would be appreciated.
Some times after doing head gaskets and decking the heads, you will experience blow by. That can be because of a few factors. The 2 main culprits are valve guides/seal or piston ring issues. This is especially true in high mileage engines.
Did you have the heads milled? Did you do a compression test before and after the work?

no I didn't have them milled and I know I should have but I didn't have the time or $ for it right now so if it bites me in the *** in the future it's the price I will pay. I checked the heads and there weren't any cracks visible and they were within spec. The engine has 155000 on it. And no I didn't and haven't done compression tests on it at all. Never had a reason too. It runs great, had a miss but it was #7 injector not plugged in all the way with that plugged in it smoothed right out. Could it just be some coolant in the chambers or oil that is burning off? Coolant went everywhere when I pulled the heads off. I vaccumed out what i could and blew out what i could with air.
I don't know if that could be moisture burning off from coolant getting into everything....but wouldn't that mean the oil would show signs of coolant in it?
Honestly, i would fix the y-pipe leak and drive it for a little while and see how it is....

yea that's the plan. I'll probly fix them Thursday. Good think is the truck is running great. The other thing that was weird was the bit of oil in the coolant but I again think it's cross contamination from the head job. Just don't want to screw anything up driving it around.
Ok so to just kinda follow up I was doing some reading and went out and lit off the truck (fired up great) and there is no more blowby. Pretty sure it was steam. I did wash the intake so I'm assuming that there was moisture in the intake which caused the steam effect. There is some oil in my coolant so that sucks. Pretty sure that it's just from the job. I'm gonna see if it clears up, if not I'll have to clean out the cooling system. Anyway just wanted to give an update. Will come back once I get her on the road.
