New F250 with a knocking engine..... decoding help please!
We just came across a 1980 F250 really cheap. The previous owners have done a lot of work to the engine, etc. The engine started knocking so they sold it to me. I am looking to find out what kind of axles, gear ratio, transmission, etc. it has. I have a Bronco of the same year with a blown transmission I thought about using. The engineis a 429 out of a 1972 police cruiser. Any decoding would be a huge help. Truck is rust free and in great shape other than the engine which I intend to rebuild. All feedback appreciated.....
That makes sense. The truck is located in New Mexico. It was originally a 351M truck so that manual tranny setup should work perfectly. I have have a cert label to decode on the Bronco forum.
Since it says "1980" it looks like that's just a year rather than District Sales Office. 1980 was an odd year for VIN's as well as electrical stuff on these trucks.
It has a C6 with a bad tranny. I want to take the manual setup from the F250 and put it in the Bronco. When I get the 429 rebuilt I want to put that in there as well. Bronco is rust free with a/c and cruise. What made you want a 80 instead of a 96 or a 78 for instance?
Actually, my preference is an '81 as it has the later wiring but still has the simple grille w/o the . But, an '80 is very very close.
As for a '96, I prefer the Bullnose look. And the early Broncos are smaller, but a '78 or '79 would be an option. However, since I know the Bullnoses and have the documentation on my web site that's my preference.
Having said that, I'm talking to another FTE'er about his '87 Bronco. It needs an engine but may otherwise be servicable. Anyway, I'm watching for "the right" Bronco to be a project to share with my son.
I have always liked the bullnose as well, and I have owned several over the years. I had a 82 Bronco about 2003 with a 300 I6 and a 3 speed OD Manual. That truck was incredibly reliable. I still have a 85 F350 Crew Cab 4x4 with a 6.9 as well as a 67 Bronco with a 289. Both have been outstanding trucks
As you can see from my sig, I currently have two Bullnoses. But, I just sold another '81 called Rusty about 10 days ago, and I had an '82 earlier. Plus I've owned another '82 and an '85 that were parts trucks. So, all in all I've owned at least 6 of them in the last 6 years.
