86 F350 460 solonoid was hanging up. I replaced it with a new one and all seems fine. Engine starts and starter drops out when I release key. Upon disecting old solonoid I find worn pitted contacts and a second terminal that is electrically connected to the plunger. It is marked "I". no wire was on this terminal so no wire is on the new one. Haynes instructions mention two triggering wires but as far as I can tell I have only one on the "S" terminal. The man I bought the truck from warned me he had solonoid problems that had stranded him . Any Experience with this out there?
I just went out and looked at my 85 f-350( also a 460) and there is a wire on the I terminal. It's solid blue and comes out of a fusible link. From there I can't tell because it goes under the battery tray. The other thing I see is a ground lead. I ground the solinoids and voltage regulators on all my old fords directly to the negative battery post. If the ground path is completely interupted they won't work at all but I think a marginal path just makes them fail sooner and not work as well. Could be part of your problem.Hear me now unt believe me later,ya.
as long as you carry a screwdriver, you'll never be stranded if you have a solenoid with the top terminals (versus the side terminals found on older solenoids)
in that case, you would jam a screwdriver between the 2 terminals while the igntition is on inaise and it would fire right up.
