Basic, Basic Hub Question
I probably have the most basic of hub questions, but I'm going to pose it here becaue I know I'll get the help I need.
This is on a 1990 F150 4x4, manual hubs (Ford). They have about 8 allen head screws around them if it helps, they were originally autos but the previous owner changed them over.
My question: The passenger side hub I have noticed grease/oil around the outside fo the hub -- I ASSume there is a seal/gasjket/o-ring that has let go. So, do I just unscrew the allen heads and the cover pops off for me, or is there more involved? Also, if/when I do get this off, do I have to repack grease in there, or where exactly is this coming from (the diff?). And can get this thing at an auto-parts store -- what exactly would I be looking for?
Please tell me this is all that I need and I don't have major parts damage or something!
I have looked and looked, but cannot get the most basic answers, so I look to you for help.
Thanks!
The local parts hackers probably won't have it. I don't know if Carl's 4X4 is still open up on Meriden Rd in Wolcott, it he is, then he'll have it. The silicone works for me until I break a hub, then the new ones come with new seals.
Small world, ain't it...
ON EDIT: It prob isn't a bad idea to check the bearing grease while your in there. You'll need a hub socket,(pep boys, 20 bucks), to get the hub nuts off. If the brakes and bearings were done recently, then don't worry about the grease. The liquid that is coming out of the hub is what happens to grease when it gets hot.

Anyway, I think I drive by Carls 4x4 on my way to work, but I've never stopped in or anthing, maybe I'll give that a shot next week.
As for the leakage though -- is that diff oil or grease from the bearings or what? I did check the oil in the diff and it's still right where it needs to be, which leads me towards grease. ANy help there?
Thanks!
Is that all?
Thanks alot for the help!
They carry a wide variety of sizes and material types. The only thing is that you can't buy just 1 - usually a bag of 25. I use a fair amount of them, though and it's very cost effective for me to buy this way.
Maybe you could just have some spares
