Question Basic, Basic Hub Question

Hello,
I probably have the most basic of hub questions, but I'm going to pose it here becaue I know I'll get the help I need.

This is on a 1990 F150 4x4, manual hubs (Ford). They have about 8 allen head screws around them if it helps, they were originally autos but the previous owner changed them over.

My question: The passenger side hub I have noticed grease/oil around the outside fo the hub -- I ASSume there is a seal/gasjket/o-ring that has let go. So, do I just unscrew the allen heads and the cover pops off for me, or is there more involved? Also, if/when I do get this off, do I have to repack grease in there, or where exactly is this coming from (the diff?). And can get this thing at an auto-parts store -- what exactly would I be looking for?

Please tell me this is all that I need and I don't have major parts damage or something!

I have looked and looked, but cannot get the most basic answers, so I look to you for help.

Thanks!

Basic, Basic Hub Question

Sounds like the 'cap seal' is leaking. No biggie, take the screws out and it'll pull right out, there's an o-ring that makes the hub seal. You probably won't be able to find a new seal this weekend around here. I would put a thin bead of 'right stuff' silicone over the o-ring and stuff the hub back in. I have one on my truck like that and every time I do the brakes, I just clean off the old gasket material and put some new stuff on. Been doing that for a few years now.

The local parts hackers probably won't have it. I don't know if Carl's 4X4 is still open up on Meriden Rd in Wolcott, it he is, then he'll have it. The silicone works for me until I break a hub, then the new ones come with new seals.

Small world, ain't it...

ON EDIT: It prob isn't a bad idea to check the bearing grease while your in there. You'll need a hub socket,(pep boys, 20 bucks), to get the hub nuts off. If the brakes and bearings were done recently, then don't worry about the grease. The liquid that is coming out of the hub is what happens to grease when it gets hot.

Basic, Basic Hub Question

Thanks for the reply, makes me feel a little better knowing it shouldn't be a major project. Only time I've been close is changing the pads, I did look at what it would take for the rotors but didn't look like it would be worth my time until they were REALLY ready.

Anyway, I think I drive by Carls 4x4 on my way to work, but I've never stopped in or anthing, maybe I'll give that a shot next week.

As for the leakage though -- is that diff oil or grease from the bearings or what? I did check the oil in the diff and it's still right where it needs to be, which leads me towards grease. ANy help there?

Thanks!

Basic, Basic Hub Question

Being that none of the manulas I have give any useful info here, and I really want to be sure I get it all together right -- I'm going to ask anyway. So, All I need to do is either get some gasket stuff or a new o-ring. Take the allen heads out and this piece will gently fall off. Then I just pck some more grease in there and put it all back together?

Is that all?

Thanks alot for the help!

Basic, Basic Hub Question

I usually get o-rings for auto and home use from allorings.com

They carry a wide variety of sizes and material types. The only thing is that you can't buy just 1 - usually a bag of 25. I use a fair amount of them, though and it's very cost effective for me to buy this way.

Maybe you could just have some spares !
