Hi guys, some update on my truck problem.

Last Monday I went to start the truck (was sit last 1 month) and the battery was dead, Got a new battery and finally truck start again but SURPRISE !!!

The chain noise was not present for at least 3 days!!!

Today the noise appear very similar and I was wondering... the only computer controlled component related to oil pressure are the VCT solenoids...

Maybe the problem could be just a VCT acting funny? Change a VCT will be cheaper and faster than change a whole timing kit...

Any ideas? Thanks

You could unplug one, at a time and hear if it sounds {runs} any different .

When thicker than recommended oil is used, the gasket on the tensioner blows out...then you have an internal oil leak, and a tensioner that doesnt hold the chain properly.

Let's see, unplug a VCT wil Advance? or Retard Cam timing? and if noise is not present it means the problem could be a VCT??

I'm not understand very clear what is the objective of disconnecting a VCT

UPDATE:

Hi guys I'm back with new info. Last week disassembly the Timing components and installed:

01 Crankshaft gear
02 Chain
02 Tensioners
04 Chain guides
01 Front seal
03 Cover seals
08 Spark plugs
07 Engine oil 5W20
01 Oil Filter

*** All parts original Ford

Reassembly everything and this morning engine was started. Runs and sound really nice, bring the truck to a highway for test drive for 50 miles and no error codes, no noise BUT as soon as reach the shop again...

Same chain noise at 900 RPM AAAAAGGGGHHHHH!!!!!!

A previous test shows the engine still handling at least 28 PSI at hot idle then

Why the tensioner is not holding properly the right chain?
Maybe there is a problem on one of the caps that holds the right camshaft? leaking excessive oil?

Any idea/comments? this almost new engine is turning me crazy ....

UPDATE:

Ok guys after doing a lot of research I found my truck has 2 different problems. Chain noise caused by wrong assembly and phaser oscillation so the whole timing components where removed and inspected again and I found:

1. The Right Tensioner Guide was installed on the Left bank and of course the Left was in the Right bank !! Ouch this cause the Left tensioner to be almost full tension always but the Right Tensioner was almost fully extended and not holding properly the chain. Chain slap of course

2. 2 Ford phaser New model installed, the truck still having the stock ones

3. The VCT's where inspected and I found very clean but they need to be replace to the update model also.

After installing the new VCT's the problem will be totally corrected (Hope so...)

Dude.. did it make the noise go and stay away? I doubt it. Were you even having effects on engine performance?

The OP last updated this thread back in December of 2017--doesn't seem like he's been back since.

UPDATE:

Ok guys thanks all for your help.

Since I could not fix the chain slap at 900 to 1000 RPM, I had to use 15W40 oil the last year. No more chain slap, no any performance problem on engine.

Last month the truck reach 50k miles form the previous Timing Kit repair and I notice a ticking noise coming from the right cover valve while idling then I decide to remove all covers and perform a general inspection, install a new Melling HV oil pump and all cover/pan gasket change since minor oil leaks were presents.

The ticking noise was cause by a rocker totally faulty, an additional rocker was replaced also. I found a tensioner blown gasket then I did install 2 Melling tensioners also. Finally the VCT's in the past got stuck 2 times each, then I install 2 new Melling VCT's

After reassembly engine it start and run really quiet and noiseless. The original problem of this Thread was finally solved with the Melling High Volumen oil pump. No more chain slap betwen 900 to 1000 RPM nor phaser oscillation.

I did not take oil pressure readings (yet), but I'll post after next oil change service.

Thanks again for your help
