When you click on links to various merchants on this site and make a purchase, this can result in this site earning a commission. Affiliate programs and affiliations include, but are not limited to, the eBay Partner Network.
Specifically bullet point number 6 which addresses selling/advertising in the tech forums. This includes links in sigs and thread announcements about selling items and vehicles here in the FTE classifieds as well as off-site like Craigslist and ebay.
The one aspect of being a moderator I don't like doing is using the FTE infraction system to warn people when they are improperly trying to sell extra stuff they have.
Please remember there is no advertising whatsoever allowed in the tech forums.
personally I think this rule is complete BS.
adds are 1 thing, but when someone has an issue, and you got the fix, it should be allowed to an extent.
like most people I didn't read the rules, but I offered a solution to a local mans issue dirt cheap and got my first "ding"
but im just a barracuda in a pond of sharks

The best way to handle that is to send the person a PM or email. Links to both can be found on a persons Public Profile.
I just looked. It looks like your "ding" must have been an off the record "ding" sent via PM and not the FTE infraction system.

I absolutely hear you and agree, unfortunately this came about because not everyone shares the same altruistic intentions. And since there is no way to discern intentions, reasons, or motivations regarding something like this, the decision was made a long time ago to only allow this stuff in the Classified Forum.

The problem is, to what extent? You can't allow one person to sell something and tell the other he isn't allowed to because that will just create problems and **** people off.
You have to draw a HARD line somewhere, where there is no ambiguity.
I was on these forums way back when for sale threads were tolerated "to an extent", and it created a lot of problems. Bob was selling stuff because it was allowed "to an extent" and then Joe got mad because his extent was smaller than Bob's (that's a joke, son) and his post got deleted or his thread locked. It leads to a moderation nightmare because moderators are human and use their judgment and not everyone's judgment is the same.
The current rule solves the problem and only seems to get under the skin of people who think the rules shouldn't apply to them because their intentions are wholesome.
Personally, I have no issue with the rule. This is somebody else's house and when you're a guest you follow the host's rules. If you don't like it, stay home.

you need a beer, a joint and re-read the part where the Stew read back my score chart.
respecting the rules and voicing your opinion is infact 2 totally different things.
and is the American way.
most of FTE is in the USA.
i accept the fact that this is the rule, and i abide by it.
"the rules don't apply to me?" dude, ive been burning participation trophys since the 80's
don't come to me with that BS. Stew and i talked about it, no disrespect was intended on either side, none of your "rules" were broken.
good job for sitting at your computer for ages.
i almost envy you.
