Round Two of Problems

Recently I ran this thread about issues I was having. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...h-running.html

Whenever the truck went back to running I had one slight hiccup where it threw the cel and missed like it was trying to shut down. However, it just lasted for a split second . It never did it again and ran fine for months. The cure was installing an old IPR that I put new O rings on and cleaned. The IPR wasn't a new part.

So now I was leaving the shop the other day and the truck just died. The CEL came on as it was dying. It will not start or smoke when cranking. I do have RPM. I unplugged the ICP and it didn't change anything. I do have fuel pressure at the return regulator. The injectors are not operating.

I need to pull the chip off of the ECM so I can scan it and look at whatever data it will show while cranking.

Is there any voltage I should be able to see at the IPR with the key on?

Instinctively I would think it is the IPR just because the was the last thing I worked on. I am sort of thinking there could be a short or something strange going on. The truck just all of the sudden died and will not act like it wants to start or smoke like it is not getting fuel in the hole. I even checked the HPOP reservoir to be sure it wasn't empty.

Any suggestions or thoughts?

Remove the chip before trying anything else.

I am almost positive it is something electrical. The IDM was my first thought. From what I understand there is no way to test them short of swaping them with a known good one.

Will my AE scan tool point it out if it is bad?

I was looking for a parts list to repair the IDM with. I cant find one on youtube, but a guy that shows how to repair them says in the video that he made one with the list and where to get them. Do any of you guys know of such a list?

IDM is an electronic module, maybe you could build one or repair it but you need a scope to see what it is doing. 100-250 can get you a used one off craigslist or ebay

If you find a print or parts list I would love to see it.

There is a guy on YouTube that has videos on how to repair them. Apparently he does this for a living repairing IDM and PCM. The video is titled 7.3 powerstroke IDM repair. There are three videos to that series, but number 2 is missing. In video number three he claims that he will give a list of parts needed to repair the IDM as well as which resistor to change to do the power mod. However, the video where he claims he will give the parts list and sources to obtain them is missing and I cannot find it anywhere. I sent him an email and asked if he would be nice enough to provide a parts list for the IDM repair as well as sources to me via email. I do not think he's responded yet. I will have to check my inbox. The electronic parts to repair these things as well as do the power mods is like under six or seven dollars. A guy just has to be Savvy enough with electronics to solder pieces to circuit boards. All of that 400 and $500 performance IDMcrap from the hot rod diesel shops is all smoke and mirrors. The actual resistor that makes the IDM a Performance IDM cost $1.

I ordered a 120 IDM off of ebay yesterday. The more I look into it I am thinking this is the problem. I have had a short lope on start up. It didnt last long, but it was there. Hopefully changing this will fix it.

What type of injectors are required for the 140 IDM?

voltage doesn't effect choice.
