2012 Adding Remote Start and need additional key
I recently purchased a 2012 expedition limited w/nav. It didn't include remote start. Also only came with one key.
i understand that i can add factory remote start that uses a separate key-fob for starting. i would like to buy a second key that also has the start feature button built in (like my 2016 f250). I have seen some keys that have 5 buttons ( lock, unlock, panic, trunk release, start)
Will the later 4 or 5 button remote start keys work with the 2012 remote start kit?
Is there a way to get around dealer programming with only one current key?
Has anyone gone aftermarket on remote start that uses the factory key lock button depressed 3 times for start?
Thanks - dealer quoting almost 400$ for a new programmed key - what bs.

I don't know if you can use the newer fobs on the older factory system. However, according to the documentation for the older system (e.g. the "System 100 Keyless Entry Remote Start System" used on my '11) you can easily program additional remotes yourself via the system override mode.
Unfortunately, for the ignition key you must have 2 keys in order to easily program additional keys yourself. You may be able to find a locksmith or even Home Depot that is able to program them though. The Home Depots in my area don't offer the service, but when I live in (an urban area of) NJ that HD did.
