hi
just finished pulling out the 7.3 from the van to put in my truck.
anthing you guys think i should do while its out? its a 92 with 122,000kms. previous owner said it was using about 1/2 gallon of antifreeze every oil change. the motor was a strong runner as i drove the van and know this.not smoking except for normal puff at start up,(white).the injection pump has only 10,000kms since it was replaced.no signs of water in oil or oil in water.there is however a slight antifreeze colour on the driver side head back to the rear there is a plug screwed into the head. think i am lucky enough that this is where the antifreeze is going?any and all suggestions welcome. pnose
Oh yeah your lucky allright. Well, if I can't say anything nice then at this point maybe I should keep my thoughts to myself but I can't help it. Save yourself a bunch of heartache and put in a 460 while you can. I always wanted to take my 7.3 out and roll it down a cliff. Now that mine is out I just may get to do it now. That is, unless someone with a very large vessel needs a new anchor cheap.
i know where your comming from!! the 7.3 thats in my 92 f350 4x4 caused me nothing but money.however i blame that on previous owners and their lack of maintnance. i do have a 69 428 cobra jet that would do the job nicely with a load of mods to stuff it in but id rather save that for an old stang later down the road. i know the service records for the 7.3 i have to put in the truck and it was looked after to the nines. so i guess the cheapest and probably the best route would be to go with the 7.3.
Mine was in perfect shape and over a 10 year 110,000 miles it averaged out about 2,000 a year in repairs to keep it that way; right up to the day it threw a rod. The good news about a 7.3 is the adventure of the possibility of being stranded due to burnt wiring, bad starters, water in the fuel, poor fuel, air in the lines, wasted batteries, popped glow plugs and blown belts. My last tow bill was over $400 and I am friends with the owner of the tow truck. Since the swap saved so much money then you can use that money to buy fuel additive and the extra oil and more expensive filters they use.
I got a nice complete 460 for $1000 delivered with a 100 day warranty from Ranch Ford Truck parts. That included the frame perches and motor mounts.
any one have any suggestions on anything i should check or do to this engine before i put it in??? i am going to replace the valve cover and base pan gaskets.
