I think this is extremely true. We hold on to "diesels last forever" but I think that's a thing of the past. The federal gov't and the EPA has put a stranglehold on the diesel. And I think that a shame.

I owned a 6.4 and it's dependability was how thick was your wallet. Changed to a 16 gasser and now my wallet is so thick it has stretch my pants pocket. I don't need the pulling of a diesel and if your towing heavy loads you need one and they cost a lot of money to buy and maintain period.the government ruined the diesel with emissions so if you like them buy one there great if you like to spend money. My oil change is 39 bucks not 109 and I don't have 150 dollar fuel filters and 5 k plus injection pump.thank god my ford tech is a great diesel tech and gas tech he says and I don't think I'll need him except to change my oil.

How efficient is a diesel, when it spends so much time idling.
And, why does it spend so much time idling?

Drove diesel for 12 yrs. Had a 7.3 for 8 yrs then a 6.0 for 4 yrs. Bought a 6.2 in September. Not because of 6.0 I never had a problem with it. Just wanted new and didn't trust the new diesel trucks.

It's not that they less dependable but the require so much maintenance. These days since late 2003 you can't just get in them and drive, like the old days. You have to monitor everything with apps, devices or gauges.

It takes a different mind set now to own a diesel.

But like I have said before in other threads. I love my 6oh and have had great success with it. But if I ever have to get another truck, it will be a gas.

When I looked through the first page I only saw one thread concerned with gas/diesel engines each.

Anyway, to say one is more dependable than the other is really a moot point. Anything is reliable when taken care of and maintained properly. The gist I get off this thread is that it is only meant to ruffle the feathers of diesel owners and mayhaps spurred from a beef you may have with some.

My 7.3 has been more dependable than the 91 I currently own, simply because I am finding things the previous owner neglected in it - to the point I am probably going to have to pull the engine once my diesel comes out of the body shop.

I will admit that yes, I have had to do my fair share of maintenance to my 7.3, but then again it has almost 370k miles and I wouldn't bat an eye at getting in it and driving across the country in it. Now, if I got a brand new zero mile truck, I probably would do the same - be it a gas OR diesel truck. Would I go out and buy a new truck now? No. My 7.3 gets 18MPG in the city, roughly what a brand new truck can barely get, so to me it doesn't make sense to drop a crazy amount of money on a truck that is less efficient than the truck I currently have.

On the topic of efficiency, my diesel gets 17-18MPG in the city. My gas trucks? Maybe 12MPG. At one point I used to have my gas trucks idling in the field while working on a tractor or truck to keep the cab warm, but would burn about a quarter of a tank in a couple hours. My diesel? After running for six hours straight and idling for three or four of those, it used MAYBE an eighth of a tank. This was while outside temp was 10, maybe 20 degrees - a warm place to retreat to was a must.

While I certainly hope it wasn't, part of me thinks this thread was started just to get a rise out of people and create more drama between diesel and gas owners.

TRAITOR!!!

I have loved both my diesels trucks. Say what you will about diesel, gas, propane, wind, gravity...whatever...

Own what you own and enjoy it. Talk trash and you will get a response whether you like it or not.

Have a buddy that used a 2012ish V10 and he couldn't get from gas station to gas station without running out of fuel while towing. He hated it and ended up with a diesel. But, that was him.

Haha

Chris,

Let me clarify. I mean when I am old, and can't work on my diesel anymore.

Then I would go to a gas, just so that it wouldn't be so pricey to work on.
