Millenium Possum update

Hello all,

I got the Millenium Possum working. It was out for a month because of the ignition issue. Now I have the thing running. The ignition module was not working.

Now the list
carb rebuild
new u joints
rear main seal
squeaky idler pulley
front wheel diag. sound
rear fuel tank reinstallation

So, the next part of the project that I want to do is the rear fuel tank. (did the first already) My selector valve broke. I was going to replace the selector valve, but the autozone one was not worth the money. I got it, and it was plastic, and not worth sixty bucks.
My plan is to use check valves. I want to use check valves on each outgoing line. When one tank is pumping gas, the check valve will close the other tank off. No expensive things to replace.
Only issue is the sender units. I haven't hooked mine up. I have tried every combination of wires and it's a no go.

I suppose my question is, how does the 460 activate fuel pumps? Will my check valve idea work?

Thank you,

Zuczis

I actually recently redid the dual fuel system on my 86 E350 conversion. It seems to be a spectacularly annoying system.

Part of the issue you are facing is Ford for some reason decided to power the fuel pumps AND connect the fuel senders through the valve. Here is the relevant diagram from the shop book that covers the 460 with dual fuel:

What happens is the valve turning also moves a switch that connects either one of the two senders to the dashboard. So you'd have to have your switch replicate this. I can think of wiring a SPDT relay coil into the dashboard selector switch - in one position e.g. Front, the relay is powered and the SPDT contacts switch to the front tank sender. Unpowered means the rear sender is connected by default.

I am not sure how your system works. My 88 manual is for a EFI and shows a pump in each tank as well as a high pressure pump on the frame rail.
If you have a carburetor, you don't have the return line do you?
Do you have the pump on the frame rail?

If you are completely redoing the system and don't have the fuel rail pump or return lines, you might be able to do something like this?
I remember my dad had a 1970 or 71 ford camper special truck with 2 tanks. it had a manual tank switching valve down by the drivers seat and a switch on the lower left of the dash to swap sending units.
I am guessing the manual valve looked like this :
Gas Tank and Fuel Items - 1936-1991 Gas tank selector valve

I would think you could use a double pole double throw switch to swap from tank pump/sender to tank pump/sender
