how to tighten a loose gear selector on a 1984 f150

my truck keeps jumping out of park not all the time but it's getting old, & i think its in the gear selector on the steering column. how do i tighten this up. now i have bought the lokar ACA-1807 but due to my long tube headers the transmission shop said it wouldn't work because it needs a straight line of site to connect to the tranny. (i still have it at home) my truck came with the C5 but now it has the AOD. yesterday i went under the hood and touched the linkage at the column and it shifted by me pressing on it which leads me to think that it's has something to do with the inside gear selector!

I would take the linkage loose under the hood. Then get inside the cab and put the lever in park. If it goes further and locks in park, then you know your linkage under the truck is not right. More than likely because of the swap. Hopefully there is an adjustment somewhere near the trans that will make the whole thing longer and let the inside lever go up higher so it will lock(if that ends up being the problem in the first place). Or maybe there is a rod for a c5 and another for the AOD.

There is an adjustment by the drivers side. Loosen the nut and it slides to correct position. Once in park securely, after you have loosened the adjustment, hold in taught position and tighten again.

I just about detached my gear selector linkage from the transmission while jacking the motor up from its mounts. I fixed it by removing the bracket on the bell housing and re-inserting the bushing on the linkage. Is yours secure?
