please help, balancer & flywheel question.

I once replaced a 1981 255 in a LTD with a 1978 302 and reused the 255 flywheel & harmonic balancer. VERY noticeable vibration throughout rpm range. Also engine started knocking 4 years later. I think 1981 is the year the balance changed from internal to external or vice-versa.

please help, balancer & flywheel question.

it was the '80-'81 model years when the balance change on the 5.0L happened. They didn't go from external to internal though; the weight was increased from 28oz to 50oz. If your engine simply had the flywheel and balancer from the original engine put on it, it's no wonder it vibrates. Just as a note, the 351W has always had a 28oz balance factor.

please help, balancer & flywheel question.

'81 and earlier 302's had 28 oz. balance. From '82 and up, 302's were balanced with 50 oz.

351w's stayed balanced at 28 oz.

So you need a .28 oz balanced flywheel and harmonic balancer from a 351w or a pre '82 302.
