I've got them but haven't really inspected or attempted to dig into them. They aren't terribly bright and don't throw very far so a brighter diode would be nice.
That would be a great mod to get something in there much brighter. It is an awesome feature but they arent bright enough.
I agree. The mirrors are a mixed bag on these new trucks.
1. I was concerned the new shape with the "chopped" corner would result in less rear visibility. In reality, I like the new mirror shape better. The larger lower spotter mirror is simply terrific.
2. Power fold only works when ACC power is switched on or truck is running. Big downgrade on previous gen folding mirrors.
3. LED puddle lamps under mirrors are exceptionally bright (there are two LED's under each mirror)...these are a favorite feature of mine.
4. Mirror "spotlamps" are a cool feature but not nearly bright enough. Individual on/off switches under the vent are illuminated and have on/off indicators. This is very nice, but the spotlamps themselves are too weak.
5. Outside temp sensor probe remains underneath the passenger side mirror, away from radiant heat interference from engine or bodywork or pavement. Love the location here!
6. New amber LED mirror clearance tubes look cool, but are not as bright as those on the new GM trucks. Better than previous generation, but would have liked them to be brighter.
7. Mirror turn signal repeaters are LED but are no longer visible to oncoming traffic or traffic coming from the side...only visible to traffic from behind. Gigantic Fail in my opinion, and the *only* demerit to an otherwise excellent exterior lighting package.
8. Mirror adjustment switch, selector switches, power fold, and telescope control switches are all completely illuminated. Big plus for me over last year's completely non-illuminated versions.
Has anyone gotten into one of the new 2017 mirrors yet with the factory lights?
It would be interesting to see if that can be changed to a brighter diode. for all I know it could be all on single unit and not replaceable.
If you are handy with electronics, you could definitely change it out. I'm 99% sure it won't be a replaceable LED. Most likely you will find a chip on board style LED. If you wanted to desolder it, you could then install another one. Some patience and electronics knowledge would be handy. There are tons of places to buy different chips online (Allied, Mouser, Newark).
