Serious opinions
i have a 99' XLT 150 4x4 5.4 auto, ext cab with HD tow package, it has 3yr100k warranty on 4r70 new rebuild , with Firestone ride rites. I pull a 5500 lb TT two healthy adults 3 dogs, and miscellaneous fire wood, an occasional ATV.
Borderline overload ( my opinion).
The identical truck except it is a 1997 f-250 LD for sale new engine and transmission, HD tow package, many new parts ie: PS pump , radiator etc.
Should I consider doing this upgrade or am I making a good 150 do what it does best.. Work!
All opinions appreciated..
Other differences are tire size, spring capacity and brake sweep area plus some weight difference.
You are near the max GCWR of the 150.
It will be a bit slow on hills as expected.
Depends on how long you will keep the truck, how much you pay for it and how often you tow.
One of the things that can happen is on steep hills at near wide open throttle a lot of torque is passed trough the trans converter that can 'balloon' it.
That means a rebuild should it happen. So you take a chance with any truck doing the same. This is only one of the things that goes into the factory spec.
With the trans rebuild I would be inclined to go with the 150 if there are no other considerations involved.
Good luck.
i live in the Rockies so plenty of hills. I would Never drive any vehicle up any hill wide open foot on floor. 3:73's seem to work pretty in the hills.
