2012 F350 SRW
I am looking at a 2012 F350 SRW crew cab lariat with the 6.7l. I have a few questions if any one can help me. First is that it has 170,000 miles on it. Yes its a lot. The truck is from new jersey and I was told that most of the miles are from driving on the nj turnpike to and from work. Not all of the service records arent available but am assured that it was well maintained. tuck look in excellent shape and drives nice. Interior is clean. asking $25,000 which I said was too high. Any comments, positive or negative greatly appreciated.

$20k would be a great price. 170k miles, especially highway (preferred diesel miles) is not that much.
Check the engine hour meter (accessed through the instrument cluster screen and steering wheel buttons...I believe under "System Check." Post back how many engine hours and how many idle hours. If the miles were accumulated on the highway, idle hours should be very low.
Verify the DPF / SCR system is intact by inspecting the exhaust system. The owner's manual states the DPF should be cleaned at 120k miles and replaced at 240k miles. Replacing the DPF is quite expensive. It might last longer, but this is a point of negotiation on price.
Check the frame and lower body for rust. Some light scale on the frame is OK, but it should be totally solid. (I suspect it is fine). Check the lower rear cab corners and check the rear wheel arch area for any sign of bubbling or rust. Check the parking brake cable for rust (driver's side under truck outside of frame.)
At that mileage, inspect the brake rotors front and rear for wear ridges, and see how the brake pads are if possible. You could have ball joint issues in the front end, or likely they have already been replaced. Make sure there are no leaks of significance underneath the truck (diffs, transfer case, transmission, engine).
Although the truck is relatively young, some issues can pop up with high mileage. Some auto detailers can make a truck look like it is in terrific shape when it may not be mechanically.
The transmission is supposed to have its fluid and filters (2) replaced at 150k miles.
Small point - make sure the 3rd brake light works. I have seen countless 3rd brake lights on these trucks not working...just a bulb.
Good luck

That is a lot for a high mileage truck driven in the salt, I would a least look around first. Maybe even put the 25k torwards a new one depending on your budget. Over 5 years that adds up to 35k a year, seems like a lot just to go to and from work. I am assuming this is a 2wd? If so check the radius arm bushings and ball joints for wear, a sure sign it was worked hard. Pull an oasis report on it as well, before spending 25k.
