Best Edge Programmer?

Mine just crapped out and I'm wondering A) if it's worth getting another, and B) which would be the best one to get. Ideally I'd like to be in the $500 range. Is the increase in performance significant enough to justify the cost, or does it create additional reliability issues that ultimately make it not worth the risk? Thanks in advance.

The edge programmers are known for eating up transmissions.....I had one in my truck for a day before I smoked the transmission.

I have the SCT x4 in my truck and its great. Plenty of gauges, transmission hasnt acted funny at all.....

The best Edge... isn't.

Good programmers for 6.0Ls are SCT, specifically the X4.

Of course this is just an opinion.

Appreciate the responses. I've asked several people and most recommend the SCT x4. This appears to be the way to go. Roughly $500? Any drawbacks on the SCT versus the Edge? Tougher to install/set up, ease of use, etc.? I know nothing about this stuff so would need it to be pretty much plug and play. Thanks.

X4 should be $400.

Amazon Amazon

It is super easy to install and setup. You will need a mount if you choose to use this as a monitor.

Here is a mount:

Here is the EGT probe if you want, but it is not plug and play, you will need to drill into your exhaust manifold to install it.

Thx for the feedback. I wanna make sure I'm understanding this correctly. Some of these allow you to switch modes on the fly (like the Juice with Attitude), whereas others do not. So if I want to switch from economy to a performance mode I have to shut the vehicle and reprogram? That doesn't seem terribly user friendly. Unless I'm missing something I feel like the ability to switch on the fly is a pretty big selling point.

Yes, the SCT will also do transmission tuning as well.....

The edge will blow your transmission as you're "shifting" on the fly.....

Having to stop is not user friendly, but it does save your tranny. The programmers that do it on the fly will reprogram the pcm, but you do not get the tranny portion of the tune while doing it that way. To get the tranny portion of the tune with any programmer you have to stop the truck. So with that said, I would never shift to a higher power setting while in motion, that is just begging to blow up your tranny!

The SCT X4 has one of the best, if not the best tranny tuning of the tuners on the market.

Actually programming on the fly is a HUGE negative, not a positive.

I hope this helps.

Appreciate the feedback. So for the SCT, is it pretty much plug and play with the various modes preprogrammed? And if I wanna switch modes before starting the truck is that something that is quickly/easily done? I really know nothing about this stuff (obviously) so I'd like the most user friendly plug and play option I can find.

It takes about 3 minutes to switch tunes with the sct x4.

I'll cast my vote for the x4 as well. I had one on my 6.0 and loved it. The pro-loaded tunes are actually decent, but custom tuning is even better. I had gearhead tuning and liked it a lot. The x4 is about $400 and the gearhead tunes are i think $100 for 3 tunes. It's worth wvery penny and will eventually pay for itself in fuel savings anyway.

Yeah it'll take a few minutes to switch out tunes. The X4 you can watch 8 things at once which is very nice.

I like the X4 because it is able to connect to wifi so any updates you dont have to worry about plugging into a computer. My truck was close enough to the house and I updated mine in my truck.

I have mine on the highest level canned tune and the truck doesn't act funny nor does the transmission. Of course you can shut off the EGR raise your rev limiter change the transmission shift firmness and stuff as well.

I had the older SCT and it wasn't any good for gauges but when I got custom tunes for it they were wild! Of course that truck was studded so I didn't have much to worry about!

If your truck is not studded I'd recommend routing a pressure gauge to watch coolant pressure so you'll know when you're getting close if at all when it comes to head gasket issues.

Thx for the feedback. The SCT seems to be the overwhelming winner here. Since I previously had an Edge I can get 40% off the Juice with Attitude or Evolution, or just go with the SCT. For someone with VERY limited knowledge in this arena who wants a simple plug and play, even with that discount is the SCT still the way to go?

Obviously performance far outweighs aesthetics, but man that SCT looks like something 30+ years old. Edge destroys them in that department.

I may be wrong but I think gearhead writes tunes for the edge or maybe it's PHP. Any way one of them does so that could be an option to keep the edge. Worth checking out.

It's pretty clear you already have your mind made up.

Buy the edge and have a blast!
