I put metal stiffeners on my flaps on a previous truck. Initially they worked fine.... After time the metal bent and the flaps engaged the flaps again. A stiffer piece of metal would have worked perfect but, I was concerned that the stiffer metal wouldn't allow the flap to flex when it hit something off road or inadvertently. The Idea of the use of "Springs" is a great idea. Just thinking outside the box at times works.

LOL, yea!
Was sitting in a job interview one time and it went very well. In fact they asked me back the next day for a follow on. So I changed my plane reservations and met with them. I am talking with the CEO, COO, VP Sales/Marketing and the Director of IT. About half way thru one of the guys says, you know I have one question about your dress. You showed up in a Cowboy hat, jeans and cowboy boots, we expected somebody in a suit and tie, why did wear jeans and Cowboy hat?
I leaned forward and said: In your job description you said you wanted someone that could take IT to a whole 'nother level and lead the pack in IT solutions and services and you stated that you wanted someone who could think outside the box! Well I don't just think outside the box, I live outside the box and if you want to hire a suit and tie they are a dime a dozen and you don't need me!
The CEO leaned forward after giving a glance to the others and said: When can you start work?

I had a similar experience.... But, I don't want to hijack this thread. Good for you. We all learn something every day.

Hi Don,
It looks like you have found your own solution to the problem. For the dually mud flaps that are wider and do catch a lot of air, we have a couple brackets to use. I have attached an image of one, but I can not find an image of the newer style that wraps around the pipe and has a stand off.
We will be sending you a new flap, and just ask you to transfer the weight to the new one. If you want this stand off, or our other style, let us know. That would be $10.
What address should we send the mud flap to? I want to make sure we have it right.
Duraflap's owners are good people. When the owner of the company answers the telephone, takes your order, then takes the time to talk shop with you for 20 minutes, well, I guess you could say that he's "living outside the box".
How were the duraflaps to install? I like that they make the long style.. The stock ford ones just don't keep the slush and dirt off the front of the trailers.

I had the dealer install them as part of the sale, IIRC I think they said it took about an hour...
Don -
Did you also get the wide (14") ones, or did you stick with the 12" standard. And did you put the longs on the front as well?
I went std width since I am a SRW and no, did not do longs on the front. I pull a 5th wheel and the wheels really throw up a lot of stuff on the rear of the new trucks since they sit so high.
Yeah.. my stock ford ones left my snowmobile trailer coated in muck. They protect the truck just fine, but nothing behind it. I've got the Toyo 295/65/20 tires, and they measure almost 12" wide, so I'm thinking I may up go up to the 14" wide flaps to provide a little extra coverage. I had a set of Rock Tamers hanging off the hitch on the last truck and they did great, but I don't like having the hitch installed all the time, especially when I'm towing the goosenecks.
Thanks for the info. I'll be placing my order today.
I'm confused about the function of the springs in this scenario. Since they are metal, the heat will be transferred to them. While they will cool faster than the pipe, they'll still get hot as hell during the regen. What am I missing?
My guess is the spring will cool fast enough that the contact points won't be hot enough to melt the flap. At the speeds that put the flap into contact with the spring, there's a lot of air moving past.

The springs function as a heat sink and because they are a thin wire in the airstream that cool rapidly to say the least, plus they give a standoff of about ⅝ in which keeps them off the exhaust. Its my guess the melting occurred during a regen as this was a longer trip then some of my past trips. My guess is the difference in temps at the spring vs on the exhaust is major, because I now have flowing air between the flap and the exhaust.

Are you going to get the bracket, or just keep your exhaust velocity enhancing springs?
Think I will stick with the springs because they work and due to the length of the flaps I am not sure a bracket will work as well over the long term.
Yesterday my unrequested, Duraflap replacement arrived. You have to love a company that sends you a replacement part on their own. [I sent pics and a statement to them as a point of information and never asked they replace my slightly melted flap.
