I just bought my 1st, 1988 Bronco II, 2.9L and it seems to "jack" when shifting and steering. I have it in the shop and me and the auto techs are baffled as to the casue of this problem. We have done an alignment, checked the tie rods, ball joints, shocks and even replaced the steering gear box but the problem still exists.
Whats up? Is this common with Bronco II's?
If it is a 4x4 ,first make sure it is not in 4 wheel drive,if not in 4 wheel make sure the hubs are unlocked, if so check the out side u joints the be bad, also check you bal joints. JM.02W
Thank you for your reply but this 1988 Bronco II is a 2X4 and the ball joints, shocks and supension are all good. This vehicle's front end floats when you shift gears and when you turn at high speed.
i know you checked your alignment and suspension and all that . check a crash book for mesurments ..if somthings bent it will cause some strange things to happen . . see if your frame is twisted or if u have a bent i beam raidus arm or you may just have a bad shock that hangs up .. other than that i dont have a clue unless you have some major body roll and taking hairpin turns at 50
Definatly look for signs of a previous wreck, but also look at your power steering pump. At certian RPM's or in extreme turning you may be loosing power steering, due to some un diagnosed problem. That would definatly cause a strange feeling in your steering.
Good luck!
Ok we may be making some progress here... I just came from the Auto Shop and they are Certified Auto Techs who are totally stumped on this problem. They tell me the balljoints, radial arm, shocks, ball joints and alignment are all good. I told them about the power steering and they discounted that but they might go with the fact these vehicle might have been in a wreck at some time in the past aadn have a body alingment problem. I don't think so but they are goin' to check it out.
But what about the twin I beam front end? I swear that this vehicle has a "Jacking" phenomenon when shifting and cornering. Do you think it may have a "handling" problem that may cause it to tip over? IF so how can it be corrected? Help...
If your rear leaf springs are weak (VERY COMMON problem), then that will be A LOT of the problem. Replace then w/ the leafs from a 4 door explorer.
I repacked mine. I used some of the leafs from an 86 ranger 2.3, and some from my original pack.
Man, if I knew what you meant by "jacking" I might have a better answer for you. And yes you might have a problem that could lead to a roll over, Lord knows these little broncs are notorious for that anyways. good luck and if you have time try to explain the problem in a little more detail.
I think NakedDucks has it right on the money, Check your rear leaf springs. I experienced the same problem with mine; found rear was sagging a good 2 inches and was causing severe squatting in back on excelleration and a "jacked" feel in front. Personally I’d get new ones, not used ones, why spend money on something that’s near the end of its life so you have to do it all over again a couple years later...
If that is the case I highly recomend add-a-leaf springs, they helped greatly on my B2. I only paid $42 total including shipping & handling. They are made by Rough Country, and I ordered them from JC Whitney. They are easy to install, it only took a couple of hours. The cheapest new springs I found still cost $80 a piece.
