Hey fellas. Doing my first EGR cooler delete on a 6.0 and I was wondering if the intake manifold gaskets need to be replaced also, and is there anything else I need to order other than the delete kit? I'm not doing the oil cooler, just the EGR delete. Thanks
This a side job in my shop at home. I don't think he wants to do the oil cooler, but I will run it by him. Thanks for the replies. I have worked on 7.3s for years, but my experience with 6.0s is limited. I have done glow plugs and harnesses, and changed a couple ICP sensors ('03-early '04 and '04 and up), and few other odds and ends. This is the first EGR delete though. I bought a new 6.0 in '03 and kept it three years. It only had 65,000 miles on it when I traded it, and I never turned a wrench on it other than oil changes, so didn't learn much from that one! LOL!
did you tear into the truck yet? If not, I would definitely hook some kind of scanner to it and monitor the temps.
Easier to convince your customer that way!
No I have not. Wanted to get parts ordered and have them here before he drops the truck off. I have AE, so I may go ahead and have him drop it off and check it.
Delta = EOT - ECT
15° maximum spread at 65mph for about 15 mins at full operating temp
Will it be safe to drive it at 65 for that long with the EGR cooler leaking like it is. The guy said it is pouring white smoke out the exhaust and it is loosing coolant.
Have you ran a coolant pressure test yet? Bad egr cooler & bad head gaskets produce the same symptoms. If he's not studded yet it's only a matter of time. Much easier to go in and do everything at once.
If it were me, I'd run the coolant pressure test & check deltas all at once. Also if the usual updates haven't been done, such as stc, dummies/standpipes, turbo feed/drain tubes, etc, now would be the time to suggest it while in there.
