I wanted to swap the cab, nose, and running gear from the 78 4x4 onto the 79 4x2. I gave up on the 79 because the entire body is shot but the frame is excellent. The 78 has great body and running gear but the frame and frame mounts are getting thin. I hate to get rid of the 79 frame since its in such good shape.
Thanks.
4X4 power train won't, without a ridiculous amount of work & effort. There's so much difference between 4X4 vs 4X2 chassis it's easier & probably less expensive to use chassis that's 4X4, w/ correct wheel base already, than convert 2wd into 4wd etc, IMHO. . . Altho' I am large on swapping chassis to upgrade/ modify things.
65-79 F Series chassis are virtually same in model x model & wheel base x wheel base standards, as far as body/frame swaps go. This is also true with powertrains. 460 power train out of 75 -79 will bolt into any 65-79 chassis & use OEM parts to do it. This applies to drivetrains too with 1 major ecxeption:ONLY LIKE KIND DRIVETRINS SWAP IN A BOLT IN MANNER, for upgrades/changes. Early/ late 4X4 drivetrains swap, early/ late 4X2 drivetrains swap. BUT NO 4X4s & 4X2s will swap in a bolt in manner. Their steering, suspension, X members, mount points/ positions/ methods & so forth, differ or vary greatly in many ways between 4X4 & 4X2 chassis. These two drivetrains are so totally different they have little, or nothing in common.
That being said, it can be good news, or bad news. I see it as good news because it means there's a lot more years of frames available for me to choose from if I've a client to build a 4X4 for.
Some of the older 4X4 chassis do req'/take some slight upgrades, but they're nothing compared to making 2wd into 4wd. FBp
