clearing memory

In one of the problem solving pages which dealt with replacing the throttle position sensor, it instructed us to clear the memory after installation.

I am unfamiliar with the memory; how do I do this?

Pull the negative battery cable, wait 20 mins.

That should do it. Some even pull the headlight switch after removing the negative battery cable just so that if there is any stored energy, that will remove it.

Then reconnect the negative battery cable. Be sure that if you pulled the headlight switch, you turn them back off before hand so you don't get an arc when reconnecting the cable.

Thanks.

There is an irony: This morning I cleaned the battery terminals and I inadvertently cleared the memory which resulted in the engine with jerks and temporary engine failure. Apparently the memory had reset itself and compensated for a fault , which I believe was caused by a throttle position sensor. I literally limped home stopping frequently and nursing every intersection restart for fifteen miles in rush hour traffic. I made it to within a block from my house and the engine passed out. I walked home and after the engine cooled I went back and brought it home. If I had not cleaned the terminals, I probably would not have experienced total failure. I think I needed the throttle position sensor anyway. In any case I will know tomorrow. I was wondering why the engine suddenly acted so poorly.
Thanks again.

As far as the engine failure, it could also be lack of fuel. Does it still do this? The fuel pump may also be going bad if it keeps up.
