I was on my way to work today in my 79 F-150 4x4 when my brake pedal went to the floor. (Disk brakes up front and drums in the rear.) I couldn't get the pedal to pump up at all, and found myself with no brakes. Luckily I was just about to work, and was able to use the gears and emergency brake to get me there.
(Had to drive in the grass median on a four laned highway a few hundred feet, Boy were people looking at me funny)
Once I arrived I checked underneath and found that the left front brake line had ruptured. It is partially metal, and then has a pressure fitting and changes to rubber hose.
My question is this: The master cylinder has two resevoirs, so shouldn't I still have the rear brakes??? Or was that normal to lose the brakes alltogether???
how right you are milion but with the rear brakes being of automatic adjustment type they are seldom up to snuff, the front brakes do the majority of the braking
Mil1ion, Ranger,
Thanks for the quick replies,
So I guess my rear brakes must be in need of adjustment? Glad to hear it's not anything major. I'm on the phone trying to find a parts store that has the brake line in stock right now, no luck yet. I might be out of commission for the holiday weekend.
all you need is a piece of 3/16" maybe 1/4" don't remember, brake line in the length you need. they sell them in 8 12 20 30 40 51 and 60 inch lengths. bend to fit your need, very easy to bend, OOPS never mind i see you blew the hydraulic brake hose, most parts stores have those in stock bcuz they fit so many years. good luck
We had the same problem with the brake pad not coming up on our 1978, it wat the brake booster. We found this out after replacing the fron brakes and buying a new master cylinder. We have replaced our whole brake system in our truck, including the rear brakes, and now the brakes work great!
