9" gear change

9" gear change
I want to change the gear ratio in the rear end. Probably has 350 or 400 now. Found 300 gears for $175. The guy said if I would take out the chunk and bring to him, he would swap the gears for additional $150. Is this good? I have not taken out a chunk before, what is involved in doing this? Thanks

Your 68 could have either a 28 or 31 spline 9" rear. Probably a 28, as the heavier duty trucks got Dana or Spicer rears. Do you know for sure what kind of rear you have? Later, Ford put 31 splines in trucks and performance cars.
I don't know what a '96 has in it -- not my era of expertise so to speak. But I am damn neared certain its not going to work for you.
