[updated:LAST EDITED ON 12-Dec-01 AT 08:55 AM (EST)]I just bought a 1994 Reg cab 4x4, it has a 5.8, auto od trnsmission,162,000 miles a and the off road package. The thing looks and runs absolutly terrific. The 1st question i have is how long is a motor like this good for, mine is STRONG and clean running, and has had synthetic oil run in it for a long time. can i get 250000 out of it? It does have a littlew miss in it when at idle in drive. Is this plugs or ingectors or something?
Second is, I have a small 1 second vibration in the trans sometimes when it is shifting in and out of OD, like when your on a 55mph road going up and down hills and it has to shift in and out of OD. Is this a problem? Also I have heard that its better to leave the transmission fluid alone and dont change it as the detergents in the fresh fluid will "Clean everything off" so well that it will clog up vital parts of the tranny causing it to fail. Any truth to this.
Sounds like the 'ole torque converter shudder. The next time it does this tap the brakes lightly to unlock the clutch. If it stops then it most likely is one of the clutches going out. You will need a new torque converter$ and a couple of good flushes. Easy fix. If it is just starting to fail then maybe it has not contaminated the rest of the transmission. If so then you will need to have the transmissin rebuilt$$$ to get all the crap out.
I've had my '94 F150 4x4 since 22 miles on it. I have over 175,000 on it now and only about $450.00 in engine tune-up's into it. The only engine part I had to replace so far is the secondary air injection pipe. I blew it out four wheeling on Padre Island. It is a real $%#@ to get to!
Also check the u-joints. They can cause vibrations also, sometimes at specific speeds when starting to go bad. I know this from experience.
I have a 94 F150 xlt w/ 302 but I don't know what kind of tranny I have. However.. I have had that same type of vibration that sounds like you're hitting some grooves in the road. I took it to a tranny shop and they told me I needed some sort of update on a part that keeps it from locking up. I can't remember what the name of the part was but it wasn't a torque converter problem or anything like that. It was just a small part inside the tranny that shifts in and out of OD. I was told that when I drive in the city, I should keep the overdrive off because it wasn't good for the tranny to drive in OD when going less than 45 mph. Just thought I would let you know...
I think your vibration is coming for you miss in your engine. When it into overdrive it lugs the engine if your got a little pull on it such as a hill or pulling a light load which causes the miss to be more noticiable. I would say change the wires, plugs, cap, rotor, air filter, and fuel filter for a start. You should be able to replace all that stuff for under a $100 easy. Also pull the Trouble Codes of of it while your at it.
