Does anyone know if the engine block heater is automatically installed in the SD's? I've heard various reports that the heater is automatically installed, but you don't get the AC cable unless you specifically order the Engine Block Heater with a new truck.
My dealer was supposed to order it, but missed that option when they placed my order.
The dual extra heavy duty alternator, block heater, and supplemental cab heater are standard (on the diesel) with no additional charge to 16 colder, more northern states. Up in Alaska, you can't get a 17' 6.7 through a dealer without these things. Down south in the rest of the states, you have to specify these on your order. And you have to pay more for them
Not sure this gentleman's question has been answered. As an example, every Cummins engine to be installed in a Ram leaves the factory with a block heater installed regardless of final destination, but not every truck comes with the power cord.
So, does this gent simply have to buy a power cord to connect to the block heater's terminal on the block, or does he need to buy an actual block heater element and install it into the block?
I'm simply not as familiar with Powerstrokes as I am with a Cummins to provide the correct answer.
does a 2011 F 350 Diesel have a sensor on the block heater so it won't work above a certain temperature are will it work anytime it's plugged in ? I tried testing it but it's 80 degrees and it isn't turning on.
Thanks

It's about 78F at my house this afternoon, and my 2017 F350 6.2's engine block heater fired right up when I plugged it in through my Kill-a-Watt meter. The pic below shows a 370W load.
If yours isn't working, I'd confirm that your extension cord, outlet (GFI protected?), and circuit breaker are all OK. This is purely speculation on my part, but due to the diesel's larger thermal mass, I wouldn't be surprised if your engine's heater draws more power.
Cold-states (snow belt) and Canada gets the 2 alternator, engine block heater and supplemental cab heater standard. Every SD in Idaho had them when I was shopping. Dealer confirmed
GMC has the thermal trigger on it. Fords will run not matter what and a diesel heater draws a ton more. Exactly how much I am unsure but three in one plug is enough to blow your standard house hold breaker which is 15 amps?
Blowing breakers due to block heaters being plugged in is very common at work. It's like a dance who can park where. Too many diesels in a row and run out of plugs!

The way I read the Super Duty owners manual is that the engine block heater will run as long as it is plugged in. This is how my Jeep's engine block heater worked, if I wanted it to stop heating I had to unplug it.
