At a time when I was on a road far from help my new Linclon Aviator (3300 miles) suddenly stopped running.
Lincoln says the car needs a new engine. They say that it may have something to do with the timing chain and may take more than two weeks to repair.
Has anyone heard of this problem with other Aviator's? Can I expect that this problem will not recur even with a new engine?
As a footnote - Lincoln service has been rotten. They offered no assitance in getting me from the break down location to the important meeting I was about to miss. Aside from agreeing to pay for a rental car (thier money buys a Subaru) they have been unwilling to provide an equivlent loaner, provide a rental from a convenient location or compensate me for the problems this has caused me.
Sorry to hear about this terrible situation. Your Aviator has(had ) the 302-hp DOHC 4.6L V-8, which is also found in the Cobra and the Marauder (I believe). I have looked at www.blueovalnews.com and there is no mention of timing chain problems with that engine. I also can't seem to find anything searching Google. Sorry I can't help.
heard rumors of KNOWN troubles w/ this engine during launch. launch was delayed, then delayed again, then went forward. don't know how they ever fixed it... if at all... perhaps you got an early one... :-(
Thanks for the info. It seems that this may be a major problem which Ford is trying to hide.
Here is an update.
The engine was replaced after the car being in the shop for over 20 days. Ford offered no explaination or assurance that the problem is fixed. They have ignored my requst for arbitration to return the car under the lemon law. The car is running but it was running the same way before the first sudden failure. Ford has not responded to my complaint sent by REGISTERED MAIL AUGUST 25, 2003.
Despite their so called "red capet" program, there is no offer to pay for my expenses. One service rep made the lame suggestion that I send a request for reimbursemt to the dealer who has also ignored me. OVER ALL I WOULD NEVER BUY A FORD PRODUCT AGAIN.
My next step will be a formal complaint to the New York State Attorney General. If anyone is interested they should post a note and I will continue with updates. Thanks again for your support and comments.

I don't know if this is any help. In florida we have one dealer that does buy backs of trucks and cars that are problem child. The dealer here in florida is Bill Currie Ford, I'd give them a call and see if there is a dealer up there.
Hey, get hold of your local TV station. Some of them have help lines to get poeple threw the problems of big business. Plus give them a black eye and they know it and don't want it hurts the wallit.
