500 miles on her and waning screen came up, "Adaptive Steering Fault, have serviced". Doesn't reset after restart. Once yesterday, it threw that fault plus Hill Descent and Advanced Accident Avoidance fault all at the same time. Those haven't come back yet, but Adaptive Steering Fault has.
Form what I have seen from the volvo I would make sure your sensors are clean and even if it was just dirt you will likely have to go in to clear the codes.
I believe Volvo has a mandatory service for the assistive features and they shut off if you do not bring it in. Includes calibrating the radar.
Not sure if that helps but think a visit to dealership is in your near future.

Anyone else gotten this/these?
Dealer is ordering entirely new steering wheel after checking fault codes.... Why use a scalpel when a hatchet will work just fine. Lol.
I just got this error today....
It clearly a battery voltage issue (I have been in several times for battery leakage - which I believe is a symptom of the problem).
dealer diagnosis of the Adaptive Steering Fault -
is said to be caused by the lane assist module (located inside the steering wheel) and they have a steering wheel ordered (should be here tomorrow).
I did notice pulling a very small (3 rail) motorcycle trailer that the steering effort was unusually heavy, upon detection of the trailer/lights plugged in.
The steering level/effort returned to "normal" when I unplugged/disconnected the trailer - and the error didnt occur until the 3rd drive (after dropping the trailer).
I had reason to pull the trailer again for several miles (with one bike on the trailer) when I returned it to storage and didnt notice the (previously) increased (heavy) steering effort that time.
Same just got my adaptive steering fault today, I can add that to the leaking sunroof, doors that kept opening, broken starter. Maybe they can do it well they deal with the recall for the block heater.

I just got these messages yesterday when leaving work. 94,000 miles and it drove to work just fine (1.5 hours each way) but when cranked to drive home, error messages galore. Dealership cannot get it in for at least a week, then diagnosis is expected to take 5-7 days. Weird how its under warranty and they won't provide a loaner or a rental. What are we supposed to do without a vehicle for a week or more? Walk 80 miles each way to work? After all the other issues this truck has had, this will likely be the last Ford I purchase.

Knock on wood, I haven't had any Adaptive Steering issues yet on my 2020. I omitted the option on my 2022 that 's on order to avoid the risk in the future since the benefits don't outweigh the potential hassle in my opinion. I think I've read that some have replaced the Adaptive Steering wheel with a standard steering wheel when they were out of warranty to solve the maintenance/reliability issue.
Many guys with 2022 trucks on order that had ordered adaptive steering cannot get their trucks built, due to a lack of parts, have to either wait a very long time or are being advised to remove that feature in order to get their trucks built. We're loving this thread.
I had my adaptive steering throw this error code after we had to replace a bunch of suspension components due to excessive steering wheel play (track bar, ball joints, tie rods, etc). I was already peeved that I had to do this with only 53k miles on the truck, but the error code after that just added salt to the wound. I was able to dive into the Steering Effort Control Module and pull the code as C1039: Active Front Steering (AFS) Lock - Unexpected Operation. I lost the adaptive steering, as well as the dynamic lines on the backup camera that show wheel position.
The mechanic said he could not get his tool to communicate with the SECM to reset the fault, so the dealership was the only alternative. I was hoping this would be covered under the powertrain, but no joy on that. Dealership said the steering wheel needs to be replaced to the tune of $2.5K so I said they could shove that. As other's have stated, apparently it's all one integrated module to make it that much more of a wallet punch to the customer.
I guess I just have to live with this annoying error code each time I drive now. I'm definitely not happy with the quality of my '17 truck overall. Between other issues like the backup camera fogging over, the before-mentioned steering component excessive wear, and a few other electric gremlins, it's a host of issues that shouldn't be a thing for a truck that is only a few years old with less than 60k on the odometer.
Not under warranty. I sent it to the dealer for the adaptive steering error and they charged me $3500 for several other things but didn't fix the code. So I left it there then they finally called and told me it needed a new steering wheel. Now I can't trust them as far as I can throw em. One of the parts they told me would fix it before looked brand new. I think they were just throwing parts on hoping that would fix it, then they finally googled it like I did and found this forum. So I'm not ready to throw in another $3000 for a steering wheel and it not fix the problem.
