Cold start on engine 6.7 Powerstroke

I live in Canada, we are cold where I am. My question to the forum is...

Is it normal to remote start the truck when cold and I mean -30C cold and have the engine rev around 1300 RPM and not warm up by the time the truck shuts down after 15 minutes on the remote?

I am pretty sure it's not good for the diesel to be screaming at 1300rpm and then shut down at that rpm.

My 2015 6.7 would return to slow idle as it warmed up. But this new one does not slow down at all before it shuts off.

Comments?

Mine does this. I had rapid supplemental heat on my last one and this one doesn't have it. It takes forever to warm up

Yup, it's the nature of a Diesel engine.....lean burning and efficient means less heat rejected into the coolant. Gotta "Work" a diesel to produce any heat. Even the Volkswagen TDI suffers from the same issue.

All Canada spec trucks come with supplemental cab heater and engine block heater as standard. The elevated idle is normal until a set engine temp level.

I noticed when I was fooling around with the BUILD & PRICE tool that the block heater and supplemental rapid heat were also added on a PSD truck when I put in my Wisconsin zip code.

I'm pretty sure they both come standard on trucks in any of the northern states. That was a nice surprise when I went to order

To touch on the original post, my truck takes forever to warm up. There is no way it would even come close during a 15 minute idle (even high idle). The supplemental cab heater is a nice option for this reason! It doesn't get warm, but it takes the bite out of the air. My old 7.3L would get a little heat in her during a 15 minute high idle, but I also had the exhaust back pressure valve intact (EBPV) which I don't think these new trucks have (at least to my knowledge which is admittedly small on these new ones). As noted above...if its that cold out, you may wanna plug in which will significantly reduce warm up time.

My truck was plugged in for 4 hours. It was -26 and wind chill much cooler. She started like a summer fresh day. Was warm in 10 minutes and not a single complaint or whine from the truck.

I started it cold without plugging in at -15 and noticed a very slight groan. Nothing like my old 08 would do. Again she warmed up quick.

I am sure warming up is subjective to most but the 2017 blows the 2008 out of the water in terms of heating up and cold starts.

Melan - did all the cold weather stuff engage? The steering wheel heater, fan on max, seat heaters on when you remote started it. If not that could be why she is cold. It's in the setting on the dash under advanced.

Same here with my 2012 but without the block heater plugged in. Was up in Ft. Kent Maine on a sledding trip. Had to start up to give someone a jump. -27 and started right up.

I talked to my Ford dealer in Manitowoc, WI. last week and asked if I could delete the supplemental rapid heater on an ordered truck. He said "no" it can't be deleted as it's standard in Wisconsin. He said Ford does not increase the price on the truck either which I thought couldn't be correct. But looking at his inventory and the "Build & Price", the list price is the same as the states that don't have it as standard. I didn't think I needed the heater as I don't use the truck in winter. -30C is pretty cold. I've started my 2016 diesel in -15F and so far this year started my 2017 diesel in -10F.

In both cases, the trucks start quickly by remote, and then immediately idle up as you noticed. The 2017 idled up even after being plugged in all night. When you engage Drive, the engine immediately idles down and operates normally...but once the truck is put back into park...even after driving it a few miles...it idles right back up.

So, normal behavior. It bothered me a bit to have to kill the engine at high idle...but I guess there is no harm in this.

Yeah, nice little perk for us cold-weather states. Free block heater and supplemental heater.
