Working up to the point where I will be installing a new wire harness in the F1 and have been looking into how I am going to cover the wire harness.
Been looking into Painless Wiring Power Braid split loom wire cover. Very expensive, but better than wrapping the harness with electrical tape.
Searched the Web and found a few companies that sell the same stuff as Painless but much cheaper (bulk purchase - 10 to 25 foot lengths).
The problem I have is deciding how much and what sizes of split loom wire braid cover to buy. It comes in 1/8, 1/4, 13/8, 1/2, 3/4, 1 inch, and 1 1/4 inch.
Want to use this to cover all the wire In the truck but not sure what I need. I thought 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, and 1 inch.
This stuff wraps around itself and is expandable by 25%. It is heat resistant and flame proof.
Have any of you purchased and used this stuff? If so, how much did you need to cover all the wiring in your truck and what sizes did you buy?
I rewired my truck last october, I purchased 2 lengths of split loom off Ebay, easy to install and good quality. I cut it with a hot knife to keep the ends from loosening then I slipped a piece of heat shrink over the ends to keep everything looking clean.
I too bought alot of it off ebay. I used the different colors for many things. The green i ran my brake line through and fastened to the frame. Wow looks good. other colors i used on different trucks and wiring different things. It makes the engine dept pop when matched with plug wires etc.
Thanks Rdemilt and Roy for the reply. Any ideas as to how much and what sizes to buy to do the whole truck (front to rear).
Roy - did 1/2 inch do most of your wiring? I really liked how your wiring came out. Looked real clean.
Thanks
Dan
Well it was a good price from a donor you don't have a computer so smaller sizes would be better, a plan sketch showing circuits then measure on the truck ad a little for waste that is kinda how I did my truck chuck had a lot of loom that he had from del city that he brought over, I can take pic if you need but if you get a kit it will be different
You know we can get together with maybe mark or chuck they both know elect like the back of there hand, true experts those guys I don't think you have a problem
Not certain of your setup - but the stock wiring really doesn't need too much loom. There is the run for the rear lights, some for the front lights, and the engine collection. The biggest diameter bundle is only about six feet long before branching away under the dash. The rest is only going to carry 2 - 4 wires. If you are 6V, your bundles will be thicker than the 12V version.
Thanks guys
This helps a lot. I am a darksider (350 Chevy) restomod.
My f1 is going to be 12 volt, with power windows and A/C.
So, I am trying to determine what sizes I need as I don't want to buy too much, but I want to be prepared for it all.
Probably, won't tackle the wiring until summer, so I have plenty of time to decide.
I appreciate the help.
Thanks
Dan
Here is another alternative in addition to or in place of if you don't need to do too much. I bought a roll of black non-adhesive friction electrical tape 1" wide on eBay for $9.99. I forget the number of feet but it was a lot cheaper than buying something similar at the blocks parts store.
just
measured the under dash harness i'm building for my 56, it measures 3/4 inch and i'm way over built with no wires smaller than 14ga. I would think the 3/4 for you largest size.
