Since your 76 is a 2wd it (thus not a "high boy") the frame widths are the same as the 79. If you are swapping a regular cab long box on to a frame that held the same you should have no problems. Rad supports would have minor differences (round vs square headlights).

I plan on swapping everything but the 2wd components to the 79 4x4

You will be fine. But just be sure to reuse the filler neck(s) from the 76 truck. The 76 truck uses the round exposed fuel cap, where as the 79 uses a square fuel door. So the filler necks are different between the two styles. Other then that everything is a direct bolt swap.
