If I am real careful, can I replace the oilpump shaft from the dizzy hole? or is it locked to the oil pump?
I think mine is spinning with out turning the pump. After hot, I notice that when i stomp on it that the oil pressure goes down. When I release the pedal and the engine slows to below 3k rpm, the pressure picks back up again. Mind you that this is noticable on the stock idiot gauge. I will check it out with my mechanical guage tonight.
If this is truly happenning, Any ideas what might be causing it?
There is normally a retainer that holds the drive shaft in place between the oil pump and the block. This retainer prevents you from accidentally pulling the shaft out with the distributor. Sometimes when an engine is rebuilt the retainer is omitted.
If it is spinning in the pump base without turning, my guess is the whole thing is shot. While the pump itself is cheap, dropping the pan is a real pain...you have to jack the engine up.
I got lucky and It was only the oil pressure switch. I swaped it out and the idiot guage is now solid as a rock. It concerns me when that one moves knowing that it is not supposed to.
