well, actualy at the time of the swap I had on 34x9.50 swampers. The difference in low end was the biggest gain. Its almost hard to compare the two motors. Where my 302 would finaly start making power araound 3000rpm, and pull up till around 5000rpm.
My 351 is almost violent went you stand on the throttle from 2000rpms in 2nd gear. It seems to start making power at around 1500rpm, and run out of steam around 4000, almost like a diesel.
For what it's worth and it's not much but I had an 1983 F-150 XLT with a 351w and it was a dog. It also got terrible mileage. I traded it for an 87 F150 with a 302 in it and that thing was a total hot rod. It would out pull my old 351 every way there was. I hope you get it worked out.
I don't know much about this but I'd read your the codes first and fix your idle problem first before you jump to conclussions about your motor being a dog. If your computer is sensing something wrong, it's gonna probably not run at a 100% or to it's potential the rest of the time.
Just a point of view from the details above. Hope you figure her out!
yeah i agree. to be honest i have not pulled the codes yet becasue i find the procedure very confusing and i am not ever home to apoint anymore where i want to dig through the computer. waether i like it or not, i am going to do this tomarow.
Don't bother pulling the codes yourself. You could replace hundreds of dollars worth of parts only to discover it's just a vacuum leak. Place like Autozone will pull the codes for free and the printout tells you testing proceedures and possible reasons for the code. Good luck.
This is a REALLY dumb, dumb question. Are you sure you got a 351W from the junkyard?? a 302 and a 351W look a lot alike, unless you know the differences. If the junkyard pulled the motor for you and gave it to you, it could be a 302 as easy as it could be a 351w. I assume you checked that out, but just in case you didn't. you _should_ be able to feel the difference. I did when i went from a 300-6 (with 4bbl and header) to a 351w
yeah, i am for shure its a 351. before i even noticed that it said 5.8 on the intake, i noticed the EGR off of the exhaust, deck hight, exhaust manifolds ect...
oh and by the way, i do now notice the difference, heh i had to drive my froends f150 with a 302 EFI in it yesturday and boy is it a difference. my truck is still worse at starts becasue of the larger tires, but it does seem to winde itself up preaty well.
The one thing that sticks out in my mind here is one of the simplest: Your ignition timing is late.
Late (retarded) timing causes sluggish acceleration, difficulty maintaining a cold idle, and all around loss of power with an inability to revv over 4,000. I don't know if you have a timing light, but just bump it up anyway until it starts pinging, then back it down until it stops. I really think that will make the biggest difference yet. It may take several tries to really nail the timing down, especially with Ford distributors (MSD's are a great investment!), but you will really feel the difference when you do. You should also pull a spark plug out, and see what they're telling you. That's the cheapest way around to get a real reading on how you're running. TK
