New project

I recently bought a 1987 F-150 4X4 FOR $300. It doesn't run currently and I am looking to build it into my dream truck. It has a 5.0 EFI which was converted to carbureted because it didn't have the wiring harness for the injectors to work. I am going to turn it into a one of a kind Harley edition. I see it standing out due to the fact I am doing a Harley theme and Ford did not yet have a Harley edition. I started this thread for y'all to see the progress and follow the build. If anyone has any suggestions or cool ideas, feel free to share.

Decent looking vehicle to start with. Too bad someone butchered the EFI. I see a lot of vacuum lines missing, open PCV intake and other sins. Good luck.

What transmission is currently in the truck? If it's an AOD is the TV cable hooked up the carb. linkage?

Heres my suggestions:
1. Hook up the power brakes. Find any large diameter manifold vacuum port and run a line to the master cylinder. You are also missing the 90deg. check valve, but they are readily available in the dorman HELP section of your local parts store.
2. Run a short piece of hose from the nipple under the oil cap and put a cheap filter on the other end so dirt and debris cant fall in the engine. Its not a perfect solution but easy and better than being wide open.
3. REplace your heater core. Its soo easy on these bodystyle trucks. Pull glovebox door, remove heater lines, remove access panel, and pull the core. Then replace the heater lines from water pump to core, then core to block.

Thats all I can ascertain from the pictures, but youve got a good base.

This is a really great starting point. If you are intending this to be a project to be a real dream truck. My biggest suggestion is not to rush, and start from scratch. I would pull that engine, strip it down or at least re-gasket the whole thing. Convert back to EFI. its easy to find a harness in a yard. That 5.0 is an awesome motor, I have that in my truck and I couldn't be happier.

Also be sure to address any rust promptly, its cancer to these trucks, and ignoring it can be costly later.

If it was mine I kinda went over the engine. I would clean it up, convert it, do the gaskets.

Transmission, depending on miles, I would consider doing a new filter and gasket for it.

Do the rear end. At the very least bust open the seal, clean it out real well, and if the gears arent all eaten up, re-gasket it, new fluid.

I think you have a great starting place with this truck. Will be interested to see the progress as it comes along.

rla2005: I am not 100% sure on the trans. All I know at this time is that it's automatic. I will most likely rebuild it because me nor the previous owner are aware of its working condition.

chrono16: To address the rust, I will be ordering new metal from LMC truck and other sources. The driver floor panel is rusted completely through. Other than that, the cab is pretty solid. I'm guessing it was redone or came from the south. For the motor it will be swapped because this one has a crack in the block. Forgot to put that in the original post. But most of the stuff you covered (motor, trans, rear end) is my first priority as I want to ave it running before worrying about cosmetics, A/C, lift kit and everything else.
