I have completely missed the acquisition of Big Blue so I see there is another thread I need to go get caught up on. It was only started a week ago but I see you are already to 17 pages... Why am I not surprised!
This is literally a case of if-you-snooze-you-lose. I didn't and now I have a gem. However, that gem runs 2500 RPM on the highway, so is begging for a ZF5. I happen to have one that was to go in Dad's truck, but if I put it in Big Blue I need to find a tranny for Dad's. And, after I'd driven the ZF5 a bit, albeit not in its best guise, I'd come to the conclusion it didn't really fit with the "sophisticated feel" I was hoping for on Dad's. So, I'm researching E4OD's.
As for the length of the thread - guilty as charged. But, I did get a bit done in those pages.
Ok, I'm all caught up! And subscribed to Big Blue also. Now I see what you're doing. Some might think you're crazy given all the work you put into getting that ZF to work in Dad's truck, but I understand the mind of a perfectionist.
I admit it is all for the better to me that you're going to be researching the E4OD to the Nth degree in only the way Gary can. This will help me with my own swap someday and at the very least I can verify the research I did to date and refresh my memory on it all. I already ran twenty miles of wiring so I'm hoping I don't discover I did any of that wrong. Maybe I will only read your progress with my eyes half open... just in case.
Luke - If the ZF shifted like a sports car's transmission, say the one in the Miata I used to own, I'd be happy with it in Dad's truck. But, it shifts like a truck transmission - imagine that. So I think it is a better match in Big Blue behind the 460, which will fix two problems. First, it lets the engine RPM drop from 2500 to 1900 at 65 MPH. Second, it means I don't need to rebuild the T19 that's in Big Blue as its synchro's aren't in good shape.
$5000 for their E4OD, inc the triple-disc torque converter
If no core they'll add $500 to $600 for one
Their transmissions are all built the same, save for the torque converter, and are 750 HP capable
Brian asks questions about the engine and use of the truck and tunes the valve body for that
All internal parts are new
The transmissions are thoroughly cleaned and then painted silver, so look brand new
They use PCS brand controllers, although that price doesn't include one
I looked at the PCS web site and couldn't find a controller for an E4OD, so I called them. Vince said:
They had a controller that did the E4OD, the TCM 2000, but they've discontinued it
Their new controller is the TCM-2800 and it doesn't yet support the E4OD, although the calibrations and harnesses are being worked on now and should be available as of about April 1st
Cost with harness is about $1000
What I didn't ask is if the TCM-2800 works in stand-alone mode. But, if not the Baumann does and its cost is roughly the same.
As a point of reference the BTS price is pretty close to what I had priced out a few years ago at Transmission Exchange in Portland for their "Towmatrix" E4OD build, which is just their fancy name for the same upgrades.
Thanks for that, Luke. I'm still looking at the BTS tranny can handle twice the power the engine can make. Perhaps there's a solid unit capable of more like 400 to 500 HP for less.
