i just got a 86 B2 XLT full load with touch drive, when i try to engage it in four wheel all it does is click in the right side of the dash, i looked there and there is a black box that is clicking as i push the button
and that is all it does
when i had the front end up in the air i spun the front drive shaft by hand and it seemed to lock the front hubs in then when i stopped it and spun the wheels it seemed to unlock them
i tried to install new push buttons but that never helped at all
please any ideas would be greatly appreciated
Have you checked the shift motor? It can get dirty and not want to shift. It can usually be cleaned and made to work again. There are instructions in a couple of places on the net.
It might be working .You have to move the truck to get the hubs to lock after you put it in 4 wheel drive.Try to engage the 4wheel drive while you are going {SLOWLY 5MPH}and see if you feel or here it ingage.DO this on dirt not on pavement. Also look on the driver side sun viser for direction on the 4x4 system. The shift motor is pretty easy to do. I have done mine on my 93 ranger, (not sure if it's the same) and my roomates 91 Explorer. They didn't make any clicking though. I just took it off, took it apart, sprayed a bunch of electrical cleaner on all the parts and oiled it up good and put it all back together. Took maybe 45 minutes.
when i am driving down the road i can hear a loud clicking noise that increases with the speed
i think it might be coming from the transfer case so i called some auto wreckers and this guy has one for me for $100 with low low K he said
I bet its the hubs . Do you still have the auto hubs? if so I bet there shot the clickingis coming from the hubs .Let someone drive it and you stand next to the truck and listen for where the noise is coming from.I bet its comeing to come from the hubs.
are these touch drive TC's any good? what about the front auto hubs?? I have a 86 Ranger STX with touch drive and I am considering converting the manual TC with Mile Marker hubs.
This is a fairly common problem in Ford Push-Button 4X4s. I t is most likely a Transfer case position sensor. At least, if you pulled the codes, that is what a mechanic would tell you. I expect about $500 for parts = labor. Sorry to bear the bad news. (Oh, and the click is the electric relay behind the glove box, the signal is not going anywhere after the box, so it keeps clicking trying to communicate with the sensor)
so is the manual one beter? less prone to screw up? OH and here is a a question .... I was told the eletric motor on the touch drive transfer case must hold the case in 4x the whole time it is being used?? seams a bit strange to me.... i thought it would shift it in and it would stay there untill it was disenguaged ... not held in by the motor??? Another thing is the B.W 13-50 stronger or the B.W. 13-54// , are the guts the same???? they look the same in the pictures except for the front out pu shaft, one is a yoke athe other a splined sleve, Sorry I have not had the opportunity to see them side by each in person
