Window Leak

Out camping during the record rain in S Ca. And with the winds and rain the kitchen window starts leaking. Can't figure out why. The water is running in down the center channel that the weep holes are in. Soaks a hand towel up in about 15 minutes. Guess when I get home I have to remove the window and figure out how they seal. Tightened all the screws to no avail.

Mike,

I can't remember what kind of RV you have. If you have the windows that are not on new models i.e. heat sealed, pull the screws, then the window, put on fresh putty tape, and put the window back in. Then run a bead of caulk over the top and down each side, but not the bottom edge. Very easy to do.

Hi Steve, It's a 2007 Jazz by Thor of Ca. I think you hit it correct. There's probably 20 or more screws on the inside so it appears to be a two piece unit. Never leaked before but leaking like a sieve now. Hopefully the rain quits by tomorrow. Won't be home for at least another week.

Steve, one other question. When the outer window is removed will the inner stay in place? Bottom line, can one person do this or is it a two man job?

If you have to, you can do it onsite as it doesn't take much time and any RV supplier in your area has putty tape by the roll for not much money. Screws are #2 square heads.

I plan on doing it when I get home. Does the inner window stay in place or does it fall out when the screws are removed? Is it also taped in place?

Mike,

On a standard window all that attaches inside is the beauty ring. When you unscrew that everything else is on the outside. There is no seal of any kind on the inside.

Thanks Steve. Appreciate the expertise. Wil tackle in a week or two. 37 and rain outside right now, snow expected between 5 and 6. Hard to believe I'm in S. Ca. And at 3700' elevation.

The inside screws are holding the interior clamp ring. After you pull all the screws and the clamp ring, have someone outside while you push the window assembly out. Once removed clean the frame and coach then reapply the butyl tape, install, and reinstall the clamp ring inside along with the screws. Finish up by sealing around the top and side edges of the frame to the coach.
. Here's a video of a couple that resealed theirs.

Check your roof also, I could be leaking from the roof and run down the inside wall. Just ake sure no water damage inside the cabinets and or walls.

I thought the same, I checked my roof regularly because it is 15 yrs old. Developed a leak below one window and ended up being cracked TPO roof material above the window.

Replaced all the OSB on the roof with new plywood screwed down and EPDM rubber. Hard to believe they get away with narrow gauge staples to hold the roof on.

If you're talking about thickness of the butyl tape then no it won't make a difference. 1/8" is plenty though since you're sealing two flat parallel surfaces. The 3/16" will give you more that squishes out that you will have to trim off anyways so you can seam seal it.

If you are using butyl it is much harder to trim, so don't make it harder than it needs to be.
