Lately my 2001 F250 5.4 engine is running rough when I am accelerating or keeping it certain speed. It feels like it is jerking. Like if the truck lost power for a second. This will go on for few minutes. I have no idea where to start to trouble shoot.
Could be spark plugs going bad, catalytic converter plugged, ethanol issues, fuel filter.......have you had any of that done over the years? Had the same issue with my 2006 5.4l; that's the list of what I went thru. Bern running great since i deslt with them all.
Desler did my catalytic converter - luckily I was srill in the 100,000 mile warranty period. I'm no mechanic, but my understanding (from this forum) is thst you can take off the cat snd look at it to see if it's rotted out.
Just had a similar issue check your plug boots...If they are hard/stiff it is shorting out. Soft/pliable it's still good. Put my reader on my truck found out cyl 8 missing. Pulled the boot with a new one. Runs like a champ.
Not sure on these trucks but when my catalytic converter plugged on my Tacoma back in the day, it threw an emissions code & threw my check engine light off. If its only a partial clog, it may or may not.
Some symptoms are.
Your vehicle’s fuel efficiency suddenly drops.
Your vehicle doesn’t accelerate when you step on the gas pedal.
Also I worked at a GMC dealership for a couple years & couldn't believe the amount of cars we would have come if with completely clogged fuel filters. You'll need a fuel filter remove tool, very cheap. Also over a drain pain pour out your used fuel filter and if its bad, you see a ton of dirt filled fuel come out.
With that information, I don't think my catalyst is the problem. I don't have those symptoms. I will focus on fuel filter and spark plugs since they are cheap and easy to work on.
i got my fuel line disconnect tool from harbor freight and paid about 5 dollars or less i have a 2001 f250 with the 5.4 and when i changed my fuel filter the fuel in it came out black and it had chunks in it. truck runs alot better now while driving and starts easier.
i changed all of my plugs when i first got my truck and after 200,000+ miles only 4 had been replaced someone had either paid to have them replaced or someone was lazy and did not want to replace the back 4 plugs
